How Virginia students find a mentor, a site, and a project
If you are an Excelsior University graduate nursing student in Virginia, the practice experience is not something the school hands you. You bring the mentor, the site, and the project, and your faculty approve what you bring.
Three pieces you have to bring yourself
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any of its School of Nursing programs. For the MS in Nursing Education, the MS in Nursing Informatics, and the MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration, the capstone practice experience runs entirely on what you arrange. Faculty approve the mentor you nominate. They do not assign one to you.
Virginia students end up solving three problems at once, rarely in the order they expect. Sometimes the site comes first, because a Richmond hospital or a Fairfax County agency has to agree before anyone signs. Sometimes the mentor comes first, because you already know the person who would say yes. Either way, the project has to fit the site.
What has to be in place before hours count
- A mentor: master's prepared, expert in your specialization, volunteering the time, approved by your faculty.
- A site: a Virginia hospital, nursing school, health district, or department that will sign an affiliation agreement.
- A project: independent work the site actually wants done, not a shadowing schedule.

The Virginia Board of Nursing, and why your host checks
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Virginia Board of Nursing, one of the boards inside the Virginia Department of Health Professions in Henrico. It offers free verification two ways: RN and LPN records through Nursys, and a Virginia lookup covering every license, certificate, and registration the board issues. One of those is what a compliance office will pull on you.
Renewal is handled online through the department's practitioner portal. Virginia mails a renewal notice with a personal identification number roughly 45 to 60 days before a license expires. Save the confirmation. It is the fastest proof to hand a site that is waiting on you.
Virginia is a Nurse Licensure Compact state and implemented the enhanced compact on January 19, 2018. Multistate privilege follows your primary state of residence, so after a move the board asks for proof such as a Virginia driver's license, a voter registration card, or DD Form 2058 for active duty military and spouses. A nurse practices under the laws of the state where the work happens, which matters if you are in Bristol or Winchester and the best site sits over a border.
Host agencies verify because they are letting a licensed nurse into their operations and often their data. An expired license found in week two of a capstone is an avoidable way to lose a semester.
Where Virginia mentors actually work
Your mentor must hold a master's degree and have real expertise in the specialization you are studying. That filter is narrower than it sounds, and it is where most searches stall. Virginia is a good place to run it, with large teaching systems in every corner of the Commonwealth, a deep bench of nursing schools, an organized public health structure, and a technology corridor in the north.
The badge title is not the qualification. A respected nurse manager without a master's degree does not meet it, and a master's prepared educator with no informatics background is a poor fit for an informatics capstone. Where students in each specialization look
- Education: schools of nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Virginia, Old Dominion, George Mason, James Madison, Shenandoah, Liberty, Hampton, and Norfolk State, plus community college nursing programs such as Northern Virginia, Reynolds, Tidewater, and Virginia Western. Hospital staff development and nurse residency offices are the other half of this market.
- Informatics: clinical informatics and analytics teams at Sentara Health in Norfolk, Inova in Falls Church and Fairfax, VCU Health in Richmond, UVA Health in Charlottesville, Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, and Riverside Health System in Newport News. Northern Virginia adds health technology employers such as Leidos in Reston and Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean.
- Leadership: nurse directors, quality leaders, and chief nursing officers at Bon Secours, Centra in Lynchburg, Valley Health in Winchester, Mary Washington Healthcare, Augusta Health, Ballad Health in the far southwest, and the Veterans Affairs medical centers in Richmond, Hampton, and Salem. Virginia Department of Health district leadership in Fairfax, Richmond City, Virginia Beach, Loudoun, Prince William, and the Eastern Shore suits population health work.
Getting the site to yes, and the paperwork behind it
A Virginia manager saying yes in a hallway is not the same as the organization signing. Hospitals route student requests through an education or academic partnership office, and the larger systems in Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia handle them on their own schedule. Health districts, school divisions, and community hospitals often move faster but have fewer people to spare.
The affiliation agreement is between Excelsior and the organization, not between you and the organization, which is why it should start weeks before your term rather than days. The hours, stated plainly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. In the RN-to-BS, the practice experience is about 90 hours across two 45-hour courses. Those are the numbers to build a semester around, and practice experience hours shows how students spread them.
Excelsior's word is mentor. Some students call it a preceptor, because that is what the rest of nursing says. The vocabulary is minor; the substance is not. Graduate work here is indirect care: designing curriculum, improving a workflow, analyzing data, running a quality or leadership initiative. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care, so do not plan your hours around a patient assignment. Distance, remote work, and one honest caveat
Virginia is long. A student in Bristol is closer to five other states than to Virginia Beach. Much of the indirect care work at the center of these capstones can be done at least partly remotely: informatics analysis, curriculum design, policy revision, quality dashboards, leadership projects. Some sites and some faculty are comfortable with that. Others are not.
So confirm it rather than assume it. Agree the remote or hybrid split with your course faculty and your site before you count a single hour, and do not let anyone, including us, promise you those hours will be accepted. How far ahead should I start looking in Virginia?
Earlier than feels necessary. The mentor conversation can come together in a week. The affiliation agreement runs on someone else's calendar, especially at the larger systems in Richmond, Hampton Roads, and Northern Virginia. Students who start a full term ahead rarely have trouble, and need a mentor fast is written for everyone else.
