Why is Excelsior a practice experience and not a clinical rotation?

Excelsior is a practice experience because it has no nurse-practitioner program to attach a rotation to. Excelsior University, formerly Excelsior College, offers no nurse practitioner track, no APRN license path, and no DNP. Its graduate nursing sits entirely in indirect care: the MS in Nursing Education, the MS in Nursing Informatics, and the MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration, along with the combined RN-to-MS bridges into each. None of these prepares you to diagnose, prescribe, or manage patients, so none of them uses the supervised, direct-care clinical rotation that a family nurse practitioner or psychiatric nurse practitioner program requires.

The vocabulary follows the model. Excelsior's own words are "mentor" and "practice experience," not "preceptor" and "clinical rotation." Some students still call the mentor a preceptor out of habit, and that is fine as shorthand, but the underlying work is different in kind. You are applying your specialization to a system, a process, or a group of people, not carrying a patient panel under a licensed prescriber. Getting this straight early saves you from planning for a rotation that does not exist and from chasing a preceptor when what you need is a master's-prepared mentor.

How does the mentor differ from an NP preceptor?

The mentor is defined by expertise, not by prescriptive authority. An NP clinical preceptor has to be a licensed practitioner because they supervise you delivering hands-on care. An Excelsior mentor never supervises patient care, so the requirement is different. Excelsior defines a qualified mentor as an individual with a master's degree or higher and expertise in your specialization who volunteers to serve as your resource, subject to faculty approval. Your faculty only approves the mentor you bring; the university does not assign one.

That opens the field of who can help you. For a Nursing Education capstone, a master's-prepared nurse educator or staff-development leader fits. For informatics, a clinical informatics specialist or health-IT lead with a graduate degree can qualify. For leadership, a nurse manager, director, or administrator with a master's works well. Because the mentor volunteers and is not paid, and because the role is guidance rather than clinical supervision, the person you need is often already inside your own organization. The catch is that finding, vetting, and getting that person faculty-approved still takes real time, which is the piece we handle for you.

What do you actually do for the independent project?

You design and carry out one project that improves a system, teaches a group, or advances an informatics or leadership goal. Because this is indirect care, the deliverable is a project rather than a caseload. For a Nursing Education capstone that might be a staff orientation redesign or a patient-education program. For informatics it could be a documentation-workflow improvement or a data-quality initiative. For leadership it might be a staffing, quality, or process-improvement project. In every case you arrange three things yourself: the mentor, the site or agency that hosts the project, and the project itself, all of which your Excelsior faculty must approve.

A real advantage of the indirect model is location. Practice experiences are completed in your own community and can be completed in your own workplace, subject to faculty approval and conflict-of-interest rules. You are not required to relocate to a teaching hospital or find an outside preceptor with an open panel, the way an NP student often must. That flexibility exists because the work is project-based, not a supervised rotation. If a site requires clearance, that usually runs through a compliance vendor such as CastleBranch, covering a background check, a drug screen, and immunization records, which the site and not Excelsior requires.
