How Excelsior Students Line Up a Mentor and a Site in Texas
Excelsior University does not place its graduate nursing students. You find the mentor, you find the agency, you propose the project, and faculty approve what you bring them. Here is how that goes in Texas.
What a Texas student has to assemble
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. At the graduate level that is the design, not an oversight. The MS degrees in Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration are indirect care programs, so your capstone works on a curriculum, a workflow, or a unit process rather than on patients.
A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care, which is why the school says mentor rather than preceptor. Many Texas students still say preceptor, since that is the word they learned. We answer to both, and mentor vs preceptor explains the difference.
Three pieces have to exist before your term opens: a mentor faculty will approve, a Texas agency willing to sign, and a project that agency genuinely wants finished.
The Board of Nursing, and why hosts check your license
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Texas Board of Nursing, the agency everyone calls the BON. Renewals run through the Texas Nurse Portal, and the Board notes that a renewal application will not appear in your account until your license is within sixty days of expiring. Continuing competency for relicensure sits in Board Rule 216.3.
Verification is public. The Board points people to the Texas License Verification Portal and to Nursys Quick Confirm, which is how a hospital education office or county health department checks you before signing. You are an unpaid outsider asking for a badge, system access, and the organization's name on your paperwork.
Texas is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. The Legislature adopted the compact in 1999, effective January 1, 2000. A Texas multistate license requires declaring Texas your primary state of residence, and a nurse moving between compact states applies for licensure in the new home state within sixty days. Around Fort Bliss and Joint Base San Antonio students move mid program, and a license out of step with your address can freeze a site agreement.
Who qualifies as a mentor, and where they work in Texas
The requirement is short. Your mentor holds a master's degree or higher, has expertise inside your specialization, and volunteers. Capstone faculty approve or decline your nominee. Faculty do not assign anyone, and no roster of Texas mentors is waiting to be handed out.
So you are hunting for a master's prepared professional whose ordinary job already resembles your project. Texas makes that easier than most states.

The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
Your mentor saying yes is not the employer saying yes. Large Texas systems route student requests through legal, risk management, or a central academic partnerships office, while a small clinic or rural county agency may never have seen the request before. Somebody has to sign an affiliation agreement before an hour counts, and six to eight weeks is ordinary at a big system.

The hours, counted honestly
Each MS capstone carries 135 practice experience hours, and no additional hours are awarded beyond that. It is a six credit course built around an independent project you propose, run, and present, with a scholarly paper alongside it.
RN to BS students carry roughly 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. If that is your track, begin at RN to BS practice experience, because the ask you make of a mentor is smaller.

Remote and hybrid work on a Texas project
Indirect care work suits a screen. Curriculum revision, a dashboard build, a policy rewrite, a quality improvement cycle, much of it can run from a kitchen table in Amarillo for a site in Houston when the host and your faculty agree. A student in Alpine or the Panhandle may have no master's prepared informatics leader within a two hour drive.
Do not read that as a promise. Whether a partly remote arrangement counts is a call your faculty and your host make together, in writing, before you begin. Put it in the project proposal and keep the mentor's oversight real.
