Lining up a mentor, a site, and a project in South Dakota
Excelsior University does not assign you a mentor, a host site, or a project. In South Dakota all three have to come together locally, and this page covers how that works between Sioux Falls, Rapid City, and the towns in between.
Three things you have to produce yourself
Excelsior states plainly that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. That is the design, not an oversight. MS Nursing Education, MS Nursing Informatics, and MS Nursing Leadership and Administration are indirect care degrees built around a project you carry out inside a real organization, and Excelsior calls the person who oversees it a mentor. Some students call it a preceptor, but the roles differ. See mentor vs preceptor.
Before the capstone term opens, your job is to assemble a package and hand it to faculty for approval.
What has to be in place before the term starts
- A master's prepared mentor whose expertise matches your specialization. Faculty approves the person you nominate, and does not find one for you.
- A site or agency willing to host the work, plus a signed affiliation agreement with Excelsior.
- A defined capstone project the site genuinely wants done, not a classroom exercise.
- Current health and background records in CastleBranch, because the host will ask.
Your license, the state board, and why the host cares
You arrive already licensed, so the regulator that matters is the South Dakota Board of Nursing. It licenses registered nurses here and publishes a public license lookup any employer or clinic can search. Renewals run through the board's Nurse Portal. Confirm the current cycle, fee, and practice requirement on the board's own site, not on a summary like this one.
South Dakota is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the board says so on its compact page. A multistate license lets you practice in other member states without a second license, it requires residency in a compact state, a nurse who changes residency applies in the new party state within sixty days, and while practicing on it you answer to the laws of the state where the care happens. For odd cases, the compact is the authority.
This stops being academic once a placement is real. The hospital, college, or health department hosting you verifies your license before it puts you near its staff, patients, or systems. A lapsed or pending license is the most ordinary reason a placement stalls in the week it was meant to start.
Who can mentor you here, and where those nurses sit
The bar is simple. Master's prepared, currently working in the area you are studying, and willing to give you real time across the term. South Dakota has a small population and a concentrated health care sector, which means fewer candidates than Illinois and far less searching once you know which buildings to look in.

- Nursing education: faculty and staff developers at the South Dakota State University College of Nursing in Brookings, which also runs program options in Sioux Falls and Rapid City, plus the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, Augustana University in Sioux Falls, Mount Marty University in Yankton, and Lake Area Technical College in Watertown. The site, the agreement, and the paperwork nobody warns you about
A yes from a mentor is half of it. The organization also has to sign an affiliation agreement with Excelsior, and that travels through a legal or risk office, not through the nurse who agreed to help. It moves faster at the smaller rural systems and slower at Sanford, Avera, and Monument, where student requests funnel into a central education office with a queue. Start a full term ahead, ask in writing, and ask who signs.

The hours, counted honestly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours, and it helps to be clear about what fills them. You are producing something: a curriculum revision, a documentation or workflow redesign, an onboarding overhaul, a quality or staffing initiative. A good project is one the host can still use after you graduate.
The RN-to-BS practice experience runs about 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses. Lighter in volume, identical in structure. Spread over a term, 135 hours is a part-time load on a working nurse's schedule, and most students here absorb it without cutting shifts. Distance, remote work, and where we come in
Sioux Falls to Rapid City is roughly 350 miles, and a student in Pierre, Winner, or Lemmon may have one hospital inside an hour. That geography is why hybrid arrangements matter more here than in dense states, and why a plan built on long commutes collapses by week three.
Indirect care work travels well. Informatics analysis, curriculum building, policy and quality projects, and standing meetings with your mentor can often run partly by video and shared documents when the site agrees and faculty approves the plan in advance. We will not tell you it counts. Your program decides that, and you want it in writing before you schedule around it.

Does my mentor have to hold a South Dakota license?
Your mentor must be master's prepared and working in your specialization, and the host organization adds its own credentialing rules. Because South Dakota is a compact state, a mentor practicing here may hold a multistate license issued elsewhere. Can I do the practice experience where I already work?
Often yes, and in a state this size it is frequently the fastest path, since the affiliation agreement may already exist. The catches are that the project must be distinct from your paid job duties, and that faculty may have rules about being mentored by your own supervisor. Confirm both first.
I live in South Dakota but work across the line in Minnesota or Iowa. Where should the practice experience be?
Wherever the mentor, the site, and the agreement line up. Border commuting is normal around Sioux Falls, and your multistate license plus the host site's requirements matter far more than the state line. Out-of-state practice experience covers it.
Is this the same thing as a rotation?
No. At the graduate level this is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. It is project work under a master's prepared mentor in education, informatics, or leadership, which is why the search looks nothing like prelicensure school. The honest difference spells it out.
