Lining up your Excelsior mentor, site, and project in Oregon
Excelsior University does not assign you a mentor, a site, or a project. If you are an Oregon RN in an MS in nursing education, informatics, or leadership and administration, or finishing the RN to BS, you assemble all three yourself.
What you assemble before the capstone opens
A practice experience has three parts, approved separately. A mentor, master's prepared with expertise matching your specialization, whom you recruit and nominate. A site or agency, a real Oregon organization willing to host the work and sign an affiliation agreement with Excelsior. And the project, independent work your faculty signs off on before you log an hour.
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Faculty approve the nominee you bring them; they do not go find one. Graduate work here is indirect care, so you are not counting patient contact, and a practice experience is not a clinical rotation with a shift schedule and a patient assignment.
One honest note. Excelsior does arrange clinical placement for its prelicensure Hybrid BS in Nursing program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and for its associate degree pathway. Those students are not who this page is for. If you are a licensed RN in a graduate or RN to BS course with a practice experience requirement, the arranging falls to you.
Oregon licenses its own nurses, and only its own
The regulator that matters is the Oregon State Board of Nursing in Portland. You are already licensed, so its part in your capstone is narrow but not optional. Your RN license has to be active and in good standing the day the host agency checks it, and stay that way through the project.
Oregon is not a Nurse Licensure Compact member. A multistate license from a compact state does not authorize practice in Oregon, so you need an Oregon license by examination or by endorsement. That catches nurses who moved here from a compact state and assumed the license travelled with them. Membership shifts over time, so confirm at nursecompact.com.
Verification is public and quick. The board's license lookup syncs in real time and shows status plus disciplinary actions taken after August 2010, and many employers use Nursys instead. Expect the site's credentialing office to run that check itself rather than accept your screenshot. If your renewal falls inside the capstone term, renew early. A lapse mid project ends placements rather than pausing them.
Where Oregon mentors actually work
The specialization match matters more than rank. Faculty are deciding whether this person can genuinely supervise your project, and mentoring is volunteer work, which is why the ask has to be made well.
Where the match usually turns up
- Education. Faculty and clinical education staff at Oregon Health and Science University's School of Nursing, Linfield University, the University of Portland, and George Fox in Newberg, plus nursing faculty at Chemeketa in Salem, Lane in Eugene, Portland Community College, Linn-Benton in Albany, and Central Oregon Community College in Bend. Hospital professional development departments count too.
- Informatics. Clinical informatics and electronic record teams inside OHSU, Kaiser Permanente Northwest, Providence, and Legacy Health; OCHIN, the Portland nonprofit that runs health technology for community health organizations nationally; and analytics groups at Portland health plans such as Cambia Health Solutions and Moda Health.
- Leadership and administration. Nurse managers, quality and patient safety leaders, and chief nursing officers at Salem Health, PeaceHealth Sacred Heart at RiverBend in Springfield, Asante in Medford and Grants Pass, St. Charles in Bend, Samaritan in Corvallis and Albany, Sky Lakes in Klamath Falls, and Grande Ronde Hospital in La Grande.
- Public and population health. County health departments in Multnomah, Washington, Lane, Marion, Deschutes, and Jackson counties, the Oregon Health Authority, the coordinated care organizations that administer Oregon Health Plan coverage regionally, and community health centers such as Virginia Garcia in Hillsboro and Mosaic in Bend.
The site, the agreement, and CastleBranch
Recruiting the mentor is the emotionally hard part. The affiliation agreement is the logistical one. Excelsior needs a signed agreement with the host organization before the practice experience begins, and that document goes through the host's legal or risk office, not your mentor's inbox.
Large Oregon systems route these through an academic partnership or placement office and already hold agreements with many schools, which helps if Excelsior is on their list and slows you down if it is not. Hours, remote work, and what these hours are not
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. The RN to BS practice experience runs about 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses. How you spread them across a term is a conversation between you, your mentor, and the site. See practice experience hours.
The hours fill with project work: building a course or onboarding program, evaluating a documentation workflow inside an electronic record, running a quality or staffing initiative, rewriting policy, analyzing data and presenting what it says. Nurses coming off the floor often underestimate how much of it is meetings, reading, and writing. See practice experience vs clinical rotation.
Remote and hybrid arrangements come up constantly here, and Oregon geography is why. From Ontario, Burns, Lakeview, or the coast, the nearest organization doing serious informatics or curriculum work can be hours of driving. Curriculum design, chart audits, dashboard building, and policy revision travel well over video and shared documents, and part of a practice experience can often be done at a distance when the site and faculty agree in advance.
We will not tell you it counts. Ask your course faculty first, and get the answer in writing. If your mentor or site sits across the Columbia in Vancouver, or anywhere outside Oregon, that works but adds a wrinkle covered at out of state practice experience.
When the Oregon plan falls apart
Two calls come in more than any others. A mentor who agreed in June goes on leave in August. Or a student is three weeks from registration with no site, because a placement office has not answered an email in a month. Both are fixable, and both harden every week they sit.

Can any of my practice experience be done remotely?
Sometimes, in part, and only with agreement in advance. Curriculum development, data analysis, chart review, and policy writing can often be done off site, which matters when the drive from Lakeview or Burns to a large health system is long. Get written confirmation from your faculty and the site first. We never promise remote hours will be accepted.
