How North Dakota students put an Excelsior practice experience together

Excelsior University does not assign mentors and does not arrange practice-experience sites, so a North Dakota student starts with an empty calendar and a phone. Here is how licensed RNs in Fargo, Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot, and the towns in between assemble the three approvals a capstone actually needs.

North Dakota is an NLC member (Nurse Licensure Compact). Excelsior practice experience is indirect care, 135 hours for an MSN capstone and about 90 for RN to BS.

Start with the roster, not the paperwork

Students worry about forms first. Forms are not what decides whether your term opens on schedule. What decides it is whether a specific, named, master's-prepared person has said yes. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program, which means faculty teaches the courses and approves what you propose, and everything outside that is yours to build.

North Dakota makes that concrete in a way larger states do not. A large share of the state's population sits in four cities, so the pool of qualifying mentors is small enough to be countable, and small enough that one good introduction travels quickly. Start naming people in month one rather than month three.

Three yeses, in the order they usually arrive

  • A mentor. A volunteer holding a master's degree or higher whose everyday work matches your specialization. You find the person and nominate them. Excelsior faculty approves or declines, and does not go looking on your behalf. How the search runs.
  • A site. The North Dakota hospital, college, agency, or department willing to host the work, plus the affiliation agreement its legal or education office wants on file with Excelsior.
  • A project. Independent work the site actually wants done and your faculty will accept. Scoping a capstone.

Master's-prepared nurses in North Dakota, and where they sit

A qualifying mentor is not defined by a bedside role. It is defined by a graduate degree and by real expertise in nursing education, nursing informatics, or nursing leadership and administration. That widens the pool considerably, because the work you are proposing is an indirect-care project and is deliberately not a clinical rotation. If that framing is new, mentor versus preceptor and how a practice experience differs are worth ten minutes before you write your first email.

Who to approach, by specialization

  • Education. Clinical education, onboarding, and professional development departments inside Sanford Health in Fargo and Bismarck, Essentia Health in Fargo, Altru Health System in Grand Forks, Trinity Health in Minot, and CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck, Dickinson, and Williston. Nursing faculty are the other half of this pool: North Dakota State University in Fargo and its Bismarck site at Sanford Health, the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, the University of Mary in Bismarck, Minot State University, Dickinson State University, the University of Jamestown, and the two-year programs at Bismarck State College, Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, Williston State College, North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, and Dakota College at Bottineau. Education-track detail.
  • Informatics. Clinical informatics, analytics, and electronic record teams inside those same systems, plus the health plan and claims operations employers clustered around Fargo. Do not skip the small hospitals. A facility with a couple dozen beds often has exactly one nurse who owns the record build and the reporting, and that person can be a better mentor for a focused project than a large department that will hand you to a committee. Informatics-track detail.
  • Leadership and administration. Nurse managers, directors of nursing, quality and accreditation coordinators, infection prevention leads, and chief nursing officers. In North Dakota's smaller hospitals one person often carries several of those titles at once, which is a gift for a leadership capstone, because the whole scope of the work is visible from a single desk. Leadership-track detail.

Your license, the state board, and the Minnesota line

Every Excelsior graduate nursing student is already a licensed RN, so the regulator in play is the board that holds your license. In North Dakota that is the North Dakota Board of Nursing in Bismarck. Two of its functions show up during placement. Verification is the first: the board runs a public license lookup, and a hospital education office, a college, or a county agency will run your name through it before anyone signs anything. Renewal is the second, submitted through the board's Nurse Portal along with the continuing education the board requires for your period. Check your expiration date against your capstone term now rather than in week six, because a compliance office will catch a lapse before you notice it.

North Dakota is a Nurse Licensure Compact state and implemented the current compact on January 19, 2018. If North Dakota is your primary state of residence you may hold a multistate license, and a nurse residing in another compact state can practice here on theirs.

There is a North Dakota wrinkle worth knowing early. Many of the state's nurses live in the Red River valley, where Fargo faces Moorhead and Grand Forks faces East Grand Forks across the Minnesota border. Minnesota does not appear on the compact's member list, so a multistate license does not by itself carry you into a Minnesota site. Montana and South Dakota are members, so a project across the western or southern line sits differently. Confirm your own status at nursecompact.com rather than taking any of this secondhand, and remember that the host agency can set a credentialing bar above whatever your license technically permits. Practice-experience hours are not employment. Get the site's requirements in writing. Out-of-state practice experience covers the mechanics.

The pool most North Dakota students walk past

Ask a student where the mentors are and you usually get the four biggest hospitals. That list is real, and it is also the list every other student is working at the same time. The rest of the state is quieter and frequently faster to say yes.

Critical access hospitals cover most of North Dakota's map and are staffed by people who can decide without convening anyone. Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby, Jamestown Regional Medical Center, West River Health Services in Hettinger, Mountrail County Medical Center in Stanley, McKenzie County Health in Watford City, Unity Medical Center in Grafton, and Sakakawea Medical Center in Hazen are the sort of places where a director of nursing reads your email personally. In the oil-producing west, around Williston, Watford City, Dickinson, and Tioga, workforce churn has been a standing problem, so orientation redesign, competency validation, or a retention analysis tends to land as help rather than homework.

Public health is the second overlooked pool. North Dakota Health and Human Services in Bismarck, along with the city, county, and multi-county district health units spread across the state, runs immunization, maternal and child health, program evaluation, and data work that maps cleanly onto an education, informatics, or leadership project. Tribal and rural health is the third. The Indian Health Service facility at Belcourt, Quentin N. Burdick Memorial Healthcare Facility, and Sitting Bull College at Fort Yates, which runs a board-approved nursing program, both sit outside the usual student circuit. The University of North Dakota's Center for Rural Health in Grand Forks works with rural and tribal communities on workforce, quality, and evaluation questions that are already capstone-sized. Federal sites such as the Fargo VA Medical Center are genuine options with longer approval clocks, so open those conversations a term earlier than feels necessary.

Getting a North Dakota agreement signed

The mentor conversation and the site conversation usually happen with the same people, because the mentor's employer is normally the host. The signatures come from different places. Your mentor agrees personally. The organization agrees through a legal, education, or compliance office that wants an affiliation agreement with Excelsior on file before you begin.

Size sets the pace. Sanford, Essentia, Altru, Trinity, and CHI St. Alexius all have standing student placement processes, which gives you a clear path and a queue at the same time. A county health unit, a tribal program, a critical access hospital, or a community college can often decide in a couple of weeks, because two people decide. Either way, open the paperwork a full term before you need it and skim the agreement page first, so you can answer the site's opening questions on the call instead of going away to check.

Then compliance. Excelsior uses CastleBranch, and hosts routinely add a layer of their own: immunization and tuberculosis records, a background check, a drug screen, HIPAA and safety modules, sometimes proof of coverage. Ask for that list in writing on the first call, then work it against CastleBranch compliance and student liability insurance. Winter is a genuine scheduling variable here, and a February onboarding appointment two hours away is exactly the thing you want cleared in November.

135 hours, about 90 for RN-to-BS, and the remote question

The numbers are fixed and worth planning around. Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours, the same whether your specialization is nursing education, nursing informatics, or nursing leadership and administration. The RN-to-BS in Nursing runs about 90 hours across two courses. Practice-experience hours breaks it out course by course, and RN-to-BS students should also read the RN-to-BS page.

In a state where the nearest large system can be a two-hour drive in good weather, the fair question is how much of this can happen remotely. A good deal of indirect-care work genuinely can. Curriculum building, workflow and record analysis, policy review, quality and evaluation work, and most of the writing behind a capstone do not require a building. What nobody should tell you is that your hours will count that way. Two parties decide that, the host site and your Excelsior faculty, and it needs to be agreed in advance and in writing. Do not assemble a remote plan and ask permission afterward.

If the roster is short and the term is close, here is what we do. We source the mentor and the site, run the outreach, chase the agreement, and hand you a match instead of a list of names to cold call. Pricing sits on cost, the process on how it works, and you can get matched in a few minutes. If a mentor has just withdrawn, start at replacing a mentor, and if the calendar is the problem, when you need someone fast.

Questions

Answered

Does Excelsior find me a mentor in North Dakota?

No. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. You identify a master's-prepared person with expertise in your specialization and submit that nominee for faculty approval. Faculty approves or declines. It does not keep a North Dakota placement list and it does not make the calls for you.

Can my hours happen where I already work?

Often yes, and in North Dakota it is usually the quickest route, since the organization already holds your file and your compliance records. Two questions settle it: whether your direct supervisor can serve as the approved mentor, and whether the project is genuinely separate from your regular job duties. Both are faculty calls, so ask before you build a plan around it.

I live in Fargo and want my project in Moorhead. Does my multistate license cover that?

Probably not on its own. North Dakota implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on January 19, 2018, but Minnesota is not on the compact's member list, so a North Dakota multistate license does not by itself extend across the river. Check your own situation at nursecompact.com, and ask the Minnesota site what it requires before you invest time in the conversation.

How many hours am I planning for?

135 hours for each MSN capstone in nursing education, nursing informatics, or nursing leadership and administration, and roughly 90 hours for the RN-to-BS in Nursing across two courses. Build in extra calendar time rather than extra hours. It is the agreement and the compliance file, not the hours, that usually move a start date.

How early should a North Dakota student start looking?

One full term ahead is the floor. Two is better if you are aiming at Sanford, Essentia, Altru, Trinity, CHI St. Alexius, or any federal facility, where legal review and onboarding queues run long. A district health unit, a tribal program, or a critical access hospital can move in weeks. If you are already inside that window, say so plainly when you reach out.
