Mentors and practice experience sites across North Carolina
An Excelsior graduate nursing student in North Carolina needs three things settled before a capstone course opens: a master's prepared mentor in your specialization, an agency willing to host you and sign an affiliation agreement, and a project that agency actually wants done. Here is how each piece comes together here.
The three pieces you have to line up
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. For the MS specializations and the RN to BS practice experience courses, the university approves your plan rather than assigning a placement. Faculty approve the mentor you nominate. The sourcing is yours.
Excelsior calls that person a mentor. Some students call it a preceptor, since that is the word most programs use and the word people search for. Either way, the person guides a project and signs your hours, not bedside care.
What has to be in place
- A mentor prepared at the master's level or higher, with expertise in education, informatics, or leadership.
- A North Carolina host site, plus an affiliation agreement between that organization and Excelsior.
- A project with defined scope and a deliverable the site wants, mapped to your course outcomes.
- CastleBranch clearance, plus whatever onboarding the host stacks on top.
Your RN license and the North Carolina Board of Nursing
Licensure runs through the North Carolina Board of Nursing, which regulates RN and LPN practice statewide. Its site carries renewal, the Nurse Portal, and public license verification that anyone can search by name or city. Host agencies use that same search.
At renewal or reinstatement, NCBON requires licensees to attest that they completed a self assessment of their practice, developed a learning plan, and finished one of the approved learning activity options. If a license lapses mid project, the host pulls your access and the hours stop.
North Carolina participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate license issued by your primary state of residence is recognized here. Where North Carolina mentors actually work
The people who qualify are already doing indirect care work: nurse educators, clinical informatics specialists, quality leaders, nurse managers and directors, public health program staff. The bench here is deep, because the state carries several large systems, many nursing programs, and a research corridor that employs nurses on the data side.

- Charlotte and the southern Piedmont: Atrium Health, now part of Advocate Health, plus Novant Health, Central Piedmont Community College, the UNC Charlotte School of Nursing, Mecklenburg County Public Health, and Premier Inc., a healthcare improvement company based in the city.
- The Triangle: Duke Health and the Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, UNC Health and the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing, WakeMed and Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh, Wake County Health and Human Services, and Research Triangle Park data employers such as IQVIA, SAS Institute, and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina.
- The Triad: Cone Health in Greensboro, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and Novant Health in Winston-Salem, the UNC Greensboro School of Nursing, Winston-Salem State University, and the Forsyth and Guilford county health departments.
- Eastern North Carolina: ECU Health in Greenville, the East Carolina University College of Nursing, county health departments, and small community hospitals across the coastal plain.
- The west: Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, Appalachian State University in Boone, the hospitals and colleges around Asheville, and Buncombe County Health and Human Services.
Match the setting to your track
Education capstones land where teaching already happens: a community college nursing program, a hospital education department, a simulation lab. Informatics work sits with EHR analysts, documentation improvement staff, and the people who manage connections to NC HealthConnex, the statewide health information exchange. Agreements, compliance, and 135 hours
The affiliation agreement usually decides your start date. At a large system it routes through education, then legal, then sometimes risk management, and six weeks is not unusual. A county health department, a community college nursing program, or a hospice often signs in days. If an agreement is already on file, you skip most of that wait, so ask early. Each MS capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. RN to BS students carry about 90, split across two 45 hour courses. Spread 135 over a 15 week term and it is nine hours a week. Compress it into eight and it is closer to seventeen, a second job on a full schedule. Driving Fayetteville to Raleigh for on site days is time you do not get back, so pick a host you can reach. Remote work, honest limits, and where to get help
Indirect care travels better than bedside work. Curriculum development, policy revision, dashboard building, chart audits, and quality analysis can often be done partly from home when the site agrees and faculty approve in advance. That matters in a state this wide, where Murphy sits six hours from Manteo. Do not assume it, though. Put the arrangement in writing and confirm it with course faculty before you log a remote hour. Is a practice experience the same thing as a clinical placement?

My license is from another compact state. Can I do my practice experience here?
Often yes. North Carolina participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, and a multistate license issued by your primary state of residence is recognized in other compact jurisdictions. Single state licenses and recent moves work differently, so verify with the North Carolina Board of Nursing first.
Can my own employer host my capstone?
Frequently, and here that is often the fastest route, since an agreement may already exist and you are already credentialed. Two cautions. Your mentor should not be someone whose objectivity your program would question, and the project has to be additional work with its own scope, not your regular assignment relabeled.
How long does placement usually take?
The mentor is normally the quick part and the agreement is the slow part. Large Charlotte and Triangle systems route contracts through legal and can take weeks, while county health departments and community colleges move faster. If you are already inside a term, read need a mentor fast.
