If you are an Excelsior University nursing student in New Mexico, the job ahead is not picking a site off a list. It is recruiting one qualified volunteer mentor, finding an agency willing to sign an agreement, and shaping a project your faculty will approve.
The mentor is the part that stalls people
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. At the graduate level that is by design. You recruit the mentor, secure the agency, and propose the project. Faculty approves what you bring; nobody assigns it.
A qualifying mentor is master's prepared with expertise matching your specialization. For nursing education, someone who writes curriculum or runs staff development. For informatics, someone in clinical systems, analytics, or health data. For leadership and administration, someone accountable for staffing, quality, or operations.
Some students call this person a preceptor, since that is the word most nursing programs use. Excelsior says mentor, and the difference is not cosmetic. Your New Mexico RN license is the first thing anyone verifies
You are already a licensed RN, so the regulator that matters here is the New Mexico Board of Nursing. It runs applications and renewals through an online Nurse Portal and publishes a public license lookup any host agency can run in a minute. Most do, because once you have access to their patients or data you are a line item on someone's risk list.
Three specifics worth knowing first. Licenses issued by examination or endorsement run one year plus the months to your birth month, then move to a two year cycle. Continuing education must be complete and uploaded to CE Broker before you submit a renewal, not after. And endorsement from another state adds verification plus a criminal background check, so do not start it mid term.
New Mexico is a Nurse Licensure Compact state and issues multistate compact licenses. The board posted a fee for multistate status effective June 1, 2026, so read its current notice before renewing. If your license and your site sit in different states, start with out of state practice experience.

A willing mentor is step one. Step two is the employer, which usually means an affiliation agreement between Excelsior and the agency. This is a contract review, not a formality. Large systems route it through legal and risk, federal and tribal facilities add layers, and small rural hospitals often move fastest. Plan in weeks, not days.
Excelsior uses CastleBranch for compliance. Expect a background check, immunization records, and TB screening, plus whatever the host adds in badging and orientation. Open your CastleBranch file before the site asks, and check whether that agency requires student liability insurance.
What 135 hours actually asks of you
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours built around an independent project. RN-to-BS students carry about 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. Those are the honest numbers, and they are not the hard part.
The hard part is that these are indirect care hours. You are not filling a shift, you are producing something: a curriculum revision, a data or workflow project, a quality initiative. Remote work, and where we come in
Because this is indirect care, a real share of it can often be done remotely: curriculum drafts, dashboards, policy analysis. New Mexico's distances make that appealing, and it is also where students get burned. Remote hours are not automatic. They count when the site and your faculty agree in advance, so ask before you plan around it.

One fair clarification: Excelsior does arrange placements for its prelicensure Hybrid BSN in St. Petersburg, Florida and its associate degree program.
