Lining up an Excelsior mentor and practice-experience site in New Jersey
Excelsior does not assign you a mentor, a site, or a project. A graduate nursing student in New Jersey builds all three while working full time. Here is how that gets done between Bergen County and Cape May, and where we take the search off your hands.
Your RN license is the first door, and New Jersey checks it
Registered nurses here are licensed by the New Jersey Board of Nursing, part of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs, with offices on Halsey Street in Newark. Licenses renew on a two-year cycle, and you can confirm your status and expiration date through the Division's verification system. Do that before you approach any agency. A host site's education or risk office will look you up independently, and a still-pending renewal is the kind of small thing that quietly stalls a start date.
New Jersey is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, and the Board's own compact page makes a point worth repeating: an existing New Jersey license does not become a multistate license on its own. You apply for it and meet the uniform requirements, which include primary residence in New Jersey, an active and unencumbered license, and fingerprint-based criminal history checks. If you expect to complete hours across a state line, settle that before your capstone term opens.
Who counts as a mentor here, and where those people work
Excelsior's standard is short, and it belongs to Excelsior rather than to the state: a master's degree or higher, expertise matching your specialization, and willingness to volunteer as your resource. Faculty reviews and approves the person you nominate. Faculty does not go find one. Excelsior's word is mentor, not preceptor, though plenty of students say preceptor out of habit, and the requirement is the same person either way.
New Jersey helps in one respect. It is small, dense, and full of graduate-prepared nurses, and nearly every corner of it sits within an hour of a teaching hospital, a university nursing program, or a health-data employer.
Start with people who already know your work: a manager two units over, a former instructor from the school where you finished your RN, a colleague who moved into informatics. Write down eight names before you send a single cold email. When that list runs dry, we take over the sourcing. Where New Jersey mentors come from
- Nursing Education: faculty and staff-development leaders at Rutgers School of Nursing in Newark, New Brunswick, and Blackwood, plus Seton Hall University, William Paterson, Rowan, Montclair State, Stockton, and county colleges such as Bergen, Camden County, and Brookdale.
- Nursing Informatics: clinical informatics leads and graduate-prepared analysts inside hospital systems, plus the health-data employers along the commuter corridors: Cognizant in Teaneck, Quest Diagnostics in Secaucus, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey in Newark, and the life-science offices around New Brunswick, Rahway, and East Hanover.
- Nursing Leadership and Administration: nurse managers, directors, and quality leaders at RWJBarnabas Health, Hackensack Meridian Health, Atlantic Health System, Virtua Health, Cooper University Health Care in Camden, St. Joseph's Health in Paterson, Inspira Health, AtlantiCare, Valley Health System, and Capital Health near Trenton.
- Public health: the New Jersey Department of Health in Trenton, the county and municipal health departments that blanket the state, and city health departments in Newark and Jersey City.
The site and the paperwork behind it
The mentor and the site are two separate problems. You need an agency willing to host project work, and usually an affiliation agreement between that agency and Excelsior before your first hour counts. New Jersey's larger systems route those agreements through legal, risk management, or an academic partnerships office, and that review runs in weeks rather than days. Smaller organizations move faster: county health departments, home health agencies, long-term care, school districts, and community clinics. For a focused project, the smaller host is often the better fit anyway.
Compliance runs through CastleBranch: background check, immunization and titer records, TB screening, and whatever the host adds. 135 hours, and what that means on a New Jersey schedule
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours built around an independent project. The RN-to-BS practice experience runs about 90 hours, split across two 45-hour courses. Those numbers are fixed, and they are the honest frame for planning.
Spread 135 hours across a term and you are looking at roughly nine hours a week. That is manageable until you add three twelve-hour shifts, a commute on the Parkway or the Turnpike, and a mentor whose calendar is as crowded as yours. The students who finish on time settled the mentor, the site, and the agreement before the term opened.
Worth saying plainly: Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Remote hours, crossing the river, and where we come in
Indirect-care work has a real remote component. Curriculum design, documentation and dashboard projects, policy and quality analysis, staffing and budget work: much of it happens on a laptop once you have a sponsor inside the organization. Some New Jersey students end up hybrid, on site for meetings and data access, remote for the build. Whether an arrangement counts is decided by your faculty and your site, never by a placement service, so get it approved in writing first.
Geography cuts both ways here. Nurses in Bergen and Hudson counties often work in New York, and nurses in Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester counties often work near Philadelphia. The part people miss runs the other direction: an existing New Jersey single-state license does not convert on its own. Does my Excelsior mentor have to be a registered nurse?
Not automatically. The fixed requirements are a master's degree or higher, expertise in your specialization, and agreement to volunteer, and your faculty approves the fit. An informatics project may point to a graduate-prepared informatics director or analyst. An education project usually points to a nurse educator or staff-development leader. A leadership project often fits a nurse manager or director. The mentor follows your project, not a job title.
Is an Excelsior practice experience direct patient care?

Can I use my own New Jersey employer as the site?
Often, and it is usually the smoothest path, since site access and the affiliation agreement may be half solved already. Two cautions. Your mentor should not be someone whose daily supervision of your regular assignment would give faculty pause, and the project has to be academic work rather than your job with a new label on it.
