Finding a nursing mentor and practice experience site in Nevada
If you are an Excelsior University nursing student in Nevada, nobody hands you a mentor. You find the mentor, you find the host agency, you shape the project, and your faculty approves what you bring them.

The part Excelsior leaves to you
Excelsior's graduate nursing degrees are indirect care degrees. The MS in Nursing Education, the MS in Nursing Informatics, and the MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration each end in a capstone practice experience, as does the RN to BS. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any of its School of Nursing programs, so the mentor, the host agency, and the project are yours to arrange. The bachelor's and master's programs are accredited by ACEN, the university by MSCHE.
That is not a complaint about the school. Excelsior does arrange clinical placement for its prelicensure Hybrid BSN students in St. Petersburg, Florida, and for its associate degree students. Graduate students sit in a different position on purpose, because the work is a project inside an organization. Some students still say preceptor, since that is the word used everywhere else in nursing. Excelsior's word is mentor, and the difference matters when you ask faculty for approval. Details shift by track: education, informatics, leadership, or the RN to BS practice experience.
Your RN license and the Nevada State Board of Nursing
Everyone in an Excelsior graduate nursing program is already a licensed RN, so your regulator is the Nevada State Board of Nursing. It licenses RNs, publishes a public license and certificate lookup, and runs the Nevada Nurse Portal for applications and renewals. Nevada licenses renew every two years and expire on your birthday, with continuing education due at renewal including a cultural competency component. Confirm the current contact hour count in the portal rather than trusting a third party summary.
One thing Nevada does differently from most of the country: Nevada is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. The Board has supported joining and compact bills have been introduced more than once, including in the 2025 session, but none had become law as of this writing. A multistate license from Arizona, Utah, or Idaho does not authorize you to practice as a nurse here. If you live in a compact state and want a Nevada host site, settle licensure before the site says yes. Status is at nursecompact.com and the Board's compact page.
Expect the host agency to verify your license before you set foot in the building. Even for a project that never touches a patient, risk management treats you as someone with clinical access, and the public lookup is the first place they check.
Who can mentor you in Nevada, and where those people work
The requirement is not complicated: master's prepared, with genuine expertise in your specialization. You nominate the person, faculty approves or declines, and there is no assignment list. Match the person to your track, not to nursing in general. A gifted bedside educator is not automatically right for an informatics capstone. In Nevada the people who fit cluster in a few predictable places.
Where Nevada mentors actually work
- Education: faculty at the Orvis School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Reno, the UNLV School of Nursing, Nevada State University in Henderson, Roseman University of Health Sciences, Touro University Nevada, the College of Southern Nevada, and Great Basin College in Elko, plus hospital educators and school nurse leaders in the Clark County and Washoe County districts.
- Informatics: clinical informatics and health IT teams at Renown Health in Reno, University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, the Valley Health System, Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, Carson Tahoe Health, and Dignity Health St. Rose Dominican in Henderson. Payers, Nevada Medicaid, and the state health information exchange also employ nurses in data roles.
- Leadership: nurse managers, directors, and quality or accreditation coordinators across those same systems, plus the Southern Nevada Health District, Northern Nevada Public Health serving Washoe County, Carson City Health and Human Services, and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.
- Federal and rural: the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System in North Las Vegas, the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System in Reno, and critical access hospitals and county clinics around Elko, Ely, Fallon, and Winnemucca, where one nurse leader often wears several hats.
Sites and affiliation agreements, from Las Vegas to Elko
A willing mentor is not a willing site. The organization has to agree to host you, and in most cases Excelsior and that organization need an affiliation agreement in place before any hours count. That paperwork moves between two legal departments, and it is the most common reason a Nevada student misses a term start. Start early, and start with the right person. At a large Las Vegas or Reno system the education or student placement coordinator is the gatekeeper, not the manager who said yes over coffee. At a small hospital in Elko or Fallon it may be the administrator directly. Here is what the agreement step involves.
Compliance runs through CastleBranch: background check, immunization records, a TB screen, and whatever the host adds. Nevada systems commonly require their own orientation, badge, and sometimes their own drug screen even after CastleBranch clears you. Our CastleBranch walkthrough covers the usual sticking points.
Nevada's population sits mostly in Clark and Washoe counties, so most students land something near Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno, Sparks, or Carson City. In a rural or frontier county you are not out of luck, because smaller organizations often say yes faster to a project that solves a real problem for them. If your mentor or site ends up outside Nevada, we cover that on out of state practice experience.
Hours, remote work, and the project itself
The numbers are smaller than students expect. Each MSN capstone is 135 practice experience hours. The RN to BS practice experience runs about 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. That is the whole commitment, which is why the hard part is access and paperwork rather than volume. See how the hours work.
A graduate practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. You are doing project work: building a curriculum module, mapping a workflow in the electronic record, running a quality improvement cycle, drafting a policy, analyzing staffing data. We draw the line on practice experience versus clinical placement, and show what a finished one looks like on the capstone project page.
Because the work is indirect, part of it can often be done remotely when the site and your faculty both agree, which helps if you live in Ely or Mesquite and your mentor is in Reno. We cannot promise your program will approve a remote or hybrid arrangement. Ask both in writing before you log an hour.
If your timeline is already tight
Most Nevada students who reach us are not starting from zero. A mentor changed jobs, a site stopped answering email, or week two arrived before anyone noticed the affiliation agreement was never signed. If that is you, a replacement mentor or a fast turnaround is the whole conversation, and how it works explains the sequence.
We are an independent service, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Excelsior University or ACEN, and we cannot approve anyone or guarantee a placement. We find Nevada mentors and host sites that fit your track, get the paperwork moving, and hand your faculty a nominee they can realistically approve. Fees are on our cost page. To start, get matched with your specialization and term start date.
Answered
Is Nevada a nurse licensure compact state?
No. As of this writing Nevada has not enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate license from another compact state does not authorize practice in Nevada. Compact bills have been introduced more than once, including in 2025, without becoming law. Confirm current status with the Board and nursecompact.com.
Does Excelsior assign me a mentor in Nevada?
No. You nominate someone and your faculty approves or declines. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in its School of Nursing programs, and the graduate practice experience is built around a volunteer mentor you source yourself.
How many practice experience hours will I need?
Each MSN capstone requires 135 practice experience hours. The RN to BS practice experience is about 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. Your course materials remain the authority on how those hours are documented and signed off.
Can my Nevada practice experience be done remotely?
Sometimes, and usually only in part. Indirect care work such as informatics analysis, curriculum development, and quality projects can often happen off site when the host organization and your faculty both agree in writing. Do not assume it before you ask.
