Lining up an Excelsior practice experience in Montana
Excelsior University does not hand you a mentor, a site, or a project. In Montana, where the drive between two hospitals can eat half a day, the search starts with you, and it should start earlier than you think.
Three things have to line up before hour one
A graduate practice experience is really three problems. A mentor: a master's prepared professional whose daily work matches your specialization, education, informatics, or leadership and administration. A site: an agency willing to host you and sign an affiliation agreement with the university. And a project the agency actually wants finished, because a capstone nobody at the site cares about stalls by week two.
Excelsior approves, it does not assign. You nominate the mentor, faculty reviews the nomination, and the School of Nursing does not provide clinical instruction in its programs. Some students call the person a preceptor out of habit, but Excelsior's word is mentor and the work is a practice experience, not direct patient care. Your RN license and the Montana Board of Nursing
You are already licensed, so the regulator that matters here is the Montana Board of Nursing, part of the Department of Labor and Industry's Business Standards Division. Licenses renew every two years on an odd or even schedule with a December 31 deadline, through the state's online portal, and continuing education contact hours are no longer required for renewal, a change effective November 18, 2023.
Montana has been a Nurse Licensure Compact member since 2015. The board's guidance is that a multistate privilege from another compact state lets you practice here without a separate Montana license, and that moving your primary residence in starts a 60 day clock to apply for one, effective January 2, 2024. Confirm what you hold through the Licensee Lookup or Nursys, because the agency hosting you verifies your license before it lets you near a unit, a data set, or a leadership meeting. Where Montana's master's prepared nurses actually work

Realistic places to look, by specialization
- Nursing education: clinical education and professional development offices at Billings Clinic, Logan Health in Kalispell, Benefis Health System in Great Falls, Bozeman Health, St. Peter's Health in Helena, and Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, plus nursing faculty at Montana State University, Carroll College, the University of Providence, Salish Kootenai College in Pablo, and Flathead Valley Community College. - Nursing informatics: clinical informatics and record system analyst teams inside the larger systems, Big Sky Care Connect (Montana's statewide health information exchange), and the data side of the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services. - Leadership and administration: nurse managers, directors, and chief nursing officers at the systems above; public health leadership such as RiverStone Health in Billings, Lewis and Clark Public Health in Helena, and the Gallatin City-County Health Department in Bozeman; tribal health programs and Indian Health Service facilities in the Billings Area; and the Montana VA Health Care System at Fort Harrison. Getting the agency to sign, and clearing compliance
The affiliation agreement is the piece students underestimate. It is a contract between the agency and the university, and it moves at the speed of whoever handles contracts there. A large system in Billings or Missoula probably has a template. A critical access hospital in Glasgow, Sidney, or Miles City may never have seen one, which is not a refusal, it just means your request lands on a chief executive's desk between two other jobs. Ask early, ask in writing, and ask contracts, risk management, legal, or education, depending on the size of the place. Six to twelve weeks of lead time is not paranoid here. Your compliance file runs alongside it. How many hours you are really planning for
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours, whichever track you are in. RN-to-BS students are working with about 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses, described in RN-to-BS practice experience.
Across a twelve week term, 135 hours is roughly eleven hours a week, and because the work is project shaped rather than shift shaped, most working nurses fit it around a schedule. What eats the calendar is the month or two before hour one: finding the mentor, getting the nomination approved, getting the agency to sign, clearing compliance. Distance, remote work, and when to stop doing this alone
Indirect care work travels better than bedside work. Curriculum revision, a quality dashboard, a policy rewrite, an onboarding redesign: much of it happens over video calls and shared documents, which matters when the nearest large hospital is two hours of highway away. Plenty of Montana students spend a day or two on site at the start and end of a project and do the middle from a kitchen table in Havre, Glendive, or Libby. Do not assume it, though. Whether remote or hybrid hours count is a decision your faculty and your site make together, and both have to agree in advance, so ask and get the answer in writing. If the only workable mentor is across a state line, read out of state practice experience first.

Is the practice experience the same as bedside clinical hours?
No. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. Excelsior's graduate nursing tracks are indirect care: education, informatics, and leadership and administration. You work with a master's prepared mentor on a defined project that produces something the agency can use, such as a revised orientation curriculum, a documentation workflow analysis, or a retention plan.
Does Excelsior find the mentor for me?
No. You identify and nominate the mentor, and faculty approves or declines based on credentials and fit with your specialization. Excelsior states it does not provide clinical instruction in its School of Nursing programs, so the mentor, the site, and the agreement are yours to arrange. How it works covers our side of that.
