Finding a mentor and a site in Louisiana for your Excelsior capstone
You are already a licensed RN in Louisiana, your capstone term is coming, and nobody is going to hand you a mentor. Here is how Excelsior graduate nursing students, from New Orleans to Shreveport and the parishes between, assemble the three required pieces.
The three pieces you bring yourself
Excelsior states plainly that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. At the graduate level that is the design, not an oversight. Your practice experience is an independent project you plan and run, and faculty approves what you propose rather than assigning it. You bring the mentor, the host agency, and the project.
None of it is direct patient care. MS Nursing Education, MS Nursing Informatics, and MS Nursing Leadership and Administration are indirect care degrees, so the work is curriculum design, workflow and data analysis, quality and policy projects. Your RN license and the Louisiana State Board of Nursing
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, on Perkins Road in Baton Rouge. Practical nurses answer to a separate agency, the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners. Louisiana joined the Nurse Licensure Compact in 2019, so a multistate license from your primary state of residence covers practice in other compact states. That matters when your best mentor match sits across the line in Texas or Mississippi. Expect the host agency to check your license before it signs anything. Public lookup is open to anyone and education offices use it. A lapsed or encumbered license stalls the affiliation agreement, not just your capstone.
Who qualifies as a mentor, and where they work
Excelsior asks for a mentor with a master's degree or higher and expertise matching your specialization, and faculty approves the person you nominate. The university assigns no one. You want a nurse who already does what you are studying: a faculty member or staff educator for education, a clinical applications nurse for informatics, a manager, director, or quality lead for leadership.
Louisiana nursing is a small world and names travel. Start with your own manager, the educator on your unit, faculty from the program that licensed you, and anyone you trained with who moved into a leadership seat. - Greater New Orleans: Ochsner Health, LCMC Health hospitals, LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing, Xavier University, and Delgado's Charity School of Nursing.
- Capital region: Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, Baton Rouge General, Southern University, and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady University.
- North Louisiana: Willis-Knighton Health, Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport, Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, Northwestern State University, and the Kitty DeGree School of Nursing in Monroe.
- Acadiana and the southwest: Ochsner Lafayette General, Our Lady of Lourdes, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, and McNeese State University in Lake Charles.
- Bayou region and Northshore: Terrebonne General, Thibodaux Regional, Nicholls State University, and North Oaks Health System beside Southeastern Louisiana University.
- Public and community health: parish health units, Louisiana Department of Health regional offices, centers such as Access Health Louisiana and CrescentCare, and the statewide Medicaid plans.
The site, the agreement, and the project that opens the door
The site is a separate yes from the mentor, and it is the one students underestimate. Before you begin, the agency and Excelsior sign an affiliation agreement. A large system routes that through a central education office and then legal or risk. A parish health unit, a community college nursing program, or a small rural hospital may handle it far less formally.
Open the conversation about eight weeks out and ask three things: who signs student agreements here, what onboarding do you require, and is there a project already on your wish list. Agencies sometimes ask who accredits your program. The nursing programs hold accreditation from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, and the university from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Have both ready in the first email.

Hours, remote work, and one honest promise
Each MS capstone carries 135 practice experience hours, and no additional hours are awarded beyond that. RN-to-BS students do about 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses. Those numbers look small next to the clinical loads nurses remember from prelicensure school, and that is the trap. The 135 still has to fit between your shifts and your mentor's, inside one term, at a site that took weeks to say yes. Practice experience hours breaks it down.
Much indirect care work can be done partly off site: curriculum builds, data analysis, policy drafting, quality review. Whether remote hours count is a decision your faculty and the host agency make together, so confirm it in advance and in writing. We do not promise it, and nobody else should.

Does Excelsior find my mentor for me in Louisiana?
No. You nominate someone and instructional faculty reviews and approves that nomination. The university does not assign mentors or secure sites for graduate practice experiences, which is why the search lands on the student, or on us.
I live in Mississippi or Texas and work in Louisiana. Whose license do I need?
Licensure follows the state where the work happens, and Louisiana is a compact state, so a multistate license from a compact home state generally covers practice here. Can my own manager serve as the mentor?

Whether your employer is comfortable with a direct supervisor mentoring a project inside your own unit is the agency's call, so ask both sides before you put a name on a form.
Is this the same as bedside clinicals?
