How Iowa students line up an Excelsior mentor and site
Excelsior does not assign you a mentor and does not place you at a site, so an Iowa student builds the practice experience from the ground up. Here are the Iowa pieces: your RN license, a master's prepared mentor who says yes, an agency willing to sign, and a project worth the hours.
What you are actually assembling
Excelsior's graduate nursing degrees are indirect care. The MS tracks in nursing education, nursing informatics, and leadership and administration each end in a capstone project you carry out inside a real organization. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Capstone faculty approves what you propose. Faculty does not go find it.
Some students call that person a preceptor, since that is the word other nursing programs use. Excelsior says mentor, and the difference is real: not supervised patient care, but project work beside someone who knows the specialty. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation. Three things you have to bring
- A mentor. Master's prepared or higher, expertise in your specialization, volunteering the time. You nominate, faculty approves.
- A site. An Iowa organization willing to host the work and sign an affiliation agreement with Excelsior.
- A project. Something the site genuinely needs, scoped to fill the hours and stand up to evaluation.
Your RN license and the Iowa Board of Nursing
You are already a licensed RN, so the regulator that matters is the Iowa Board of Nursing, now housed inside the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing. The board regulates the licensure of nurses, the practice of nurses, nursing education and continuing education. A capstone project does not change your scope. It changes who asks to see your license.
Iowa licenses run on a three year cycle, expiring the 15th day of your birth month, with 36 contact hours of continuing education required to renew. You renew and check status through IBON Online Services, and anyone can confirm a license through Nursys. Expect the host organization to do exactly that before a badge is printed.
Iowa is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. If your primary state of residence, meaning where you hold a driver's license, vote, and pay taxes, is another compact state, your multistate license covers practice in Iowa. The board also points to a rule giving a nurse who moves to a different compact state 60 days to apply there.
Where Iowa mentors actually are
The mentor rule sounds narrow until you count how many Iowa nurses meet it. Master's prepared nurses in education, informatics, and leadership work all over this state. They are busy, and nobody has told them a student is looking. Start from your specialization and work toward the setting.
Where to look, by track
- Education. Faculty and professional development staff at the University of Iowa College of Nursing in Iowa City, Allen College in Waterloo, Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, St. Ambrose University in Davenport, and Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids. - Informatics. Clinical informatics and analytics groups inside UnityPoint Health, MercyOne, and University of Iowa Health Care, plus payer and health technology employers around Des Moines and West Des Moines such as Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Telligen. Informatics mentors.
- Leadership. Managers, directors, and quality leaders at Broadlawns Medical Center in Des Moines, Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, the Iowa City and Des Moines VA facilities, county public health in Polk, Linn, Scott, and Black Hawk counties, and programs run by the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. The agreement is the part that surprises people
A mentor saying yes is not permission to start. The organization has to agree in writing through an affiliation agreement with Excelsior, and that document moves through legal or risk, not your mentor's inbox. Larger Iowa systems keep a student placement office that has handled it many times. A county health department or a rural critical access hospital may be seeing the request for the first time, which is slower but often friendlier, because one person decides and you can reach them. Then compliance. Excelsior works through CastleBranch, so plan on a background check and health records uploaded before you start, and expect the Iowa host to add its own orientation, badging, and record system training. The hours, stated plainly
Each MS capstone carries 135 practice experience hours tied to your independent project, and Excelsior does not award hours beyond that. RN to BS is lighter, roughly 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. See RN to BS practice experience.
The hours look nothing like shifts. Data review, stakeholder interviews, building a teaching module, testing a workflow, sitting in on a committee, writing the evaluation plan. Keep an honest log while it happens, because rebuilding one at the end is miserable and faculty can tell. More in practice experience hours and capstone project.
Remote work, state lines, and one honest caveat
Indirect care travels better than bedside work does. Informatics builds, curriculum design, policy revision, quality projects: much of that can happen partly remote when the site and your faculty both agree. That helps in a state where Sioux City to Davenport eats most of a day. It is not a promise. Approval is case by case, so confirm the split with your program before you count an hour.
Borders help too. Near Council Bluffs, the Quad Cities, Dubuque, or Sioux City, the nearest suitable site may sit in Nebraska, Illinois, Wisconsin, or South Dakota, and that can work if licensure and the agreement line up. Out of state practice experience covers the checks.

Can my manager or a colleague at my Iowa hospital be the mentor?
Often yes, if they hold a master's degree or higher, have expertise in your specialization, and will volunteer for the project rather than simply supervise your job. Whether a direct supervisor qualifies is a call for your capstone faculty, so ask before you build a plan around it.
I hold a compact multistate license from another state. Do I need an Iowa license?
Iowa is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license from your primary state of residence generally authorizes practice here. If you move between compact states, the board points to a 60 day window to apply in the new one. Confirm your own case with the board, and expect the site to check Nursys.
Is the practice experience the same as clinical hours?
No. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. You run a project in education, informatics, or leadership beside someone with expertise in that area, and the 135 hours count as project work rather than shifts.
How early should I start looking in Iowa?
