Lining up an Indiana mentor for your Excelsior practice experience
Excelsior University does not hand you a mentor, a site, or a project. An Indiana student builds all three while working. Here is how that goes here, from the Board of Nursing to the places where qualified mentors actually work.
What you are actually assembling
Every Excelsior graduate nursing program ends in a capstone practice experience, and Excelsior says plainly that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Three things land on you at once: a volunteer mentor who is master's prepared and works in your specialization, an Indiana organization willing to host you, and a project that organization genuinely wants finished.
Order matters more than students expect. A mentor with no site is a friendly conversation. A site with no project is a badge and a parking pass. Work backward from a real problem at a real organization, then ask who inside that building can sign off. Our how it works page follows the same sequence.

The Indiana State Board of Nursing, and why a host will ask
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Indiana State Board of Nursing, inside the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency in Indianapolis. You are already licensed, so the board matters for one narrow reason: your host wants proof the license is active and clean before it lets you near its staff, its systems, or its records.
Indiana RN licenses expire October 31 of every odd numbered year regardless of issue date, and the state does not attach continuing education requirements to renewal. That date ignores your enrollment calendar, so check your expiration before a capstone term rather than during one. Renewal and verification both run through the agency's online services.
Indiana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact and issues a multistate license to nurses whose primary state of residence is Indiana. Endorsing a license in from another state takes a formal verification rather than a quick public lookup, so request it early. If you live near Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, or Michigan and want a site across the line, read out of state practice experience and confirm with your program first.
Who can mentor you, and where those people work
Your mentor is master's prepared, has real expertise in your specialization, and volunteers. Faculty approves the person you nominate. Faculty does not go find one, and neither does the host. Some students say preceptor out of habit, but Excelsior's word is mentor, and the difference is more than vocabulary: see mentor vs preceptor.
For nursing education, the pool is faculty and professional development staff, and Indiana has a deep bench: the Indiana University School of Nursing, Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ball State in Muncie, the University of Southern Indiana in Evansville, Indiana State in Terre Haute, the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Marian University, and Ivy Tech campuses in nearly every metro. Hospital education departments at IU Health, Parkview Health, Deaconess, and Beacon Health System answer email faster than a department chair.
For nursing informatics, central Indiana is strong for its size. The Regenstrief Institute has done biomedical informatics work in Indianapolis for decades, the Indiana Health Information Exchange moves clinical data statewide, and Elevance Health and Eli Lilly keep large data teams in the metro. Add the informatics and clinical applications groups inside IU Health, Community Health Network, Eskenazi Health, Ascension St. Vincent, and Reid Health in Richmond.
For nursing leadership, think nurse managers, directors, quality leaders, and chief nursing officers, at every system above plus Methodist Hospitals in Gary, Community Healthcare System in northwest Indiana, and Union Health in Terre Haute. Public health is underused here: the Indiana Department of Health, the Marion County Public Health Department, the Allen County Department of Health, and county departments statewide employ master's prepared nurses running programs a capstone could help.

The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
A willing mentor is not an approved site. Excelsior needs an affiliation agreement between the university and your host, and that document travels through a legal, risk, or education office, not through the person who said yes over coffee. At a large Indiana system it can take weeks. At a county health department or a small college it can move in days, or stall because nobody there has signed one before. The hours, counted honestly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. That is the number your mentor and host are agreeing to. RN to BS is a different shape at roughly 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses. Neither total is padded with classroom time, and both assume you leave something behind the organization can use. Practice experience hours shows how the totals spread across a term.
The project is what turns hours into a grade. Make it something already on someone's wish list: a rebuilt orientation module, a documentation workflow audit, a dashboard nobody has had time to build, a retention plan for a unit losing staff faster than it hires. Remote and hybrid work, with the caveats attached
Indirect care work travels well. Curriculum revision, informatics analysis, quality dashboards, policy writing, and leadership projects can often be done partly off site when the host and your faculty both agree. That matters in a state where a nurse in Jasper or Angola may sit two hours from the nearest organization doing the work she wants to study.
Two cautions, neither small. The host still has to approve remote access, and health systems are careful about who opens a record from a kitchen table. And your faculty decides what counts, not you and not the site. Get the arrangement in writing before you log an hour.
