Finding a mentor and a practice experience site in Illinois
Excelsior University does not assign you a mentor or a site. If you are finishing an MS in Nursing Education, Informatics, or Leadership from an Illinois address, you are the one sourcing a qualified nurse, a willing agency, and a project all three parties will sign off on.
What you are actually assembling
Three pieces have to line up before your capstone term opens, and they never arrive together. A volunteer mentor who is master's prepared and works in your specialization. A site willing to host an unpaid project. A project both the site and your faculty accept. Miss one and the term does not start.
This is a practice experience, not a clinical rotation, and not direct patient care. Some students say preceptor because that is the word the rest of nursing uses, but Excelsior's word is mentor. You are not asking to shadow anyone at the bedside. You are asking for a sponsor, a seat, and access to the people and data your project needs. See how the two differ and mentor vs preceptor.
Illinois licensure, and why a host will check it
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, IDFPR, whose Division of Professional Regulation handles licensure, renewal, and reinstatement. Work backward from the expiration date printed on your license, and do not let it lapse mid term.
IDFPR's public License Lookup is approved as a primary source for verification by The Joint Commission, the National Committee for Quality Assurance, and the American Osteopathic Association's Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program. That is the tool a credentialing desk will run your name through, so pull your own record first and check the spelling, address, and status.
Illinois is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state. The compact's member list at nursecompact.com covers 43 jurisdictions and Illinois is not among them, so a multistate license issued elsewhere does not extend here. That catches students in the Quad Cities and the Metro East, since Iowa, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, and Wisconsin are all members. Who qualifies as a mentor, and where they work here
Excelsior's bar is short to state: a master's prepared nurse with real expertise in your specialization, nominated by you, approved by your faculty. Faculty approve. They do not assign.
So the work is knowing where those nurses sit. Illinois runs from one of the densest hospital and academic corridors in the country to downstate counties where the most senior master's prepared nurse for forty miles runs the health department.
Starting points by specialization
- Education: nursing faculty and clinical education staff at UIC College of Nursing, Rush University College of Nursing, Loyola University Chicago, Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois State's Mennonite College of Nursing in Normal, and SIU Edwardsville, plus community college programs such as Malcolm X College and Parkland College in Champaign.
- Informatics: clinical informatics and electronic health record teams at Northwestern Medicine, Rush, UChicago Medicine, UI Health, Advocate Health Care, Endeavor Health, OSF HealthCare in Peoria, and Carle Health in Urbana, plus Chicago health technology employers including GE HealthCare, Veradigm, and Health Care Service Corporation.
- Leadership: nurse managers, quality leaders, and chief nursing officers at Cook County Health, Sinai Chicago, Loyola Medicine, Lurie Children's, Memorial Health in Springfield, UnityPoint Health in the Quad Cities, Mercyhealth in Rockford, and Blessing Health in Quincy.
- Public health and federal: the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Chicago Department of Public Health, county departments in Cook, DuPage, Lake, Winnebago, Peoria, and Sangamon, and the VA hospitals at Hines, Chicago, and North Chicago, where onboarding runs long.
Affiliation agreements and CastleBranch
None of those organizations has agreed in advance to host anyone, and we do not speak for their policies. They are where the right people work, which is where outreach starts. Find a mentor covers the rest.
A mentor's yes is only half of it. The agency has to sign an affiliation agreement with Excelsior before you begin, and that goes to its legal or contracting office, not your mentor's inbox. Inside a large Chicago system it can take weeks. A county department or a single clinic may move in days, or stall because nobody there has ever signed one. Compliance runs through CastleBranch. The hours, stated plainly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. Same figure for Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration of Health Care Systems, and for the RN to MS routes into them. RN to BS students carry about 90 hours, split across two 45-hour courses.
135 hours is not a huge ask, and saying so changes the pitch. You are bringing an Illinois nurse leader a defined project with an end date, not an open commitment. See practice experience hours and capstone project.
One clarification. Excelsior's stated position is that it does not provide clinical instruction in its School of Nursing programs, which is why you source the mentor, site, and project yourself. The exception is the prelicensure hybrid bachelor's program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the associate program, where clinical placement is built in.
How much of this can be remote
Indirect care work travels better than bedside work. A curriculum revision, a dashboard build, an onboarding redesign, a quality improvement cycle: much of that is desk work, and it can often run partly remote when the site and your faculty agree. Students in Carbondale, Quincy, and Effingham lean on this.
Confirm it, do not assume it. That permission belongs to your program and to the host, not to us, and we will not tell you remote hours will count. Asking in week one costs nothing. Asking in week six costs a term.

Does Excelsior find my mentor for me in Illinois?
No. You nominate a master's prepared nurse whose expertise matches your specialization, and your faculty reviews and approves the nominee. The school approves, it does not assign, and the same holds for the site and the project. How it works walks the sequence.
I hold a compact multistate license. Can I use it at an Illinois site?
Illinois has not joined the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a multistate license issued elsewhere does not extend into Illinois. That trips up students near the Wisconsin, Indiana, Missouri, and Iowa lines, where the nearest strong site often sits in another state. Confirm current requirements with IDFPR before you commit.
Is a practice experience the same thing as a clinical placement?
No. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and does not involve direct patient care at the graduate level. You complete an independent project in education, informatics, or leadership under a mentor's sponsorship. The framing to use with an Illinois site is project sponsorship, not bedside supervision.
Can my manager at my Illinois hospital be my mentor?
Often yes, and it is usually the fastest route, since site access and the affiliation agreement may already be partly solved. The conditions do not change: master's prepared, matching expertise, willing to volunteer the time, approved by your faculty. Ask your faculty early whether your reporting relationship raises an objectivity concern.
How far ahead should I start?
Plan on a full term of lead time. The mentor conversation is usually the quick part. Contracting and compliance are what stretch, especially with a large Illinois system, and both must finish before your first hour counts. If a mentor already pulled out, see mentor backed out replacement.
