Finding a mentor and a practice-experience site in Arkansas
Excelsior does not assign you a mentor or a site, so an Arkansas student builds the practice experience from scratch. This page covers who qualifies as a mentor here, which Arkansas organizations host indirect-care projects, and what the state board expects of your license.
The three pieces you have to bring
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Three pieces are yours to arrange: a mentor who agrees to supervise you, a site willing to host the work, and a project that site actually wants done. Faculty approves your nominee and your plan, but faculty does not go find any of it.
Graduate nursing at Excelsior is indirect care. The MS options are Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration, plus the RN-to-MS bridges, and none of them put you at a bedside with a patient assignment. Some students say preceptor, since that is the word every other program uses, but Excelsior says mentor, and the difference changes what you are asking an Arkansas organization to do.

Your RN license and the Arkansas State Board of Nursing
You are already a licensed RN, so the regulator that matters here is the Arkansas State Board of Nursing, part of the Arkansas Department of Health, at 1123 S. University Ave. in Little Rock. ASBN issues and renews licenses, sets minimum standards, surveys nursing education programs, and handles discipline. Arkansas renews on a staggered biennial birth date system, so your expiration follows your birthday rather than one statewide deadline.
Renewal runs through the Arkansas Nurse Portal, and the link opens 60 days before your license expires. ASBN asks active licensees for either fifteen practice focused contact hours from an approval body it recognizes, or certification or recertification during the renewal period by a national certifying body it recognizes. If your practice experience straddles that window, renew first. A lapsed license ends a placement in an afternoon.
Arkansas is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, and the current compact took effect here on January 19, 2018. A license issued by a compact state is not automatically multistate, so read the face of your license and the ASBN compact page rather than assuming. Expect the host to verify you itself through the public Nurse Portal lookup, which hospital education offices and county health units treat as primary source verification, and check that the name there matches your Excelsior record. If your site sits over a state line, start with out-of-state practice experience.
Who can mentor you, and where those nurses work
The bar is plain: a master's prepared nurse whose real work matches your specialization. Leadership students need someone running a unit or a department, informatics students need someone in data, systems, or analytics, and education students need someone who teaches.
Education mentors sit around the schools and the teaching hospitals. UAMS College of Nursing is in Little Rock with a Northwest Regional Campus presence in Fayetteville, Arkansas State University runs a nursing school in Jonesboro, and Harding University houses the Carr College of Nursing in Searcy. Hospital staff education teams are often easier to reach: Baptist Health, CHI St. Vincent, Arkansas Children's in Little Rock and Springdale, Washington Regional in Fayetteville, Mercy in Rogers, and White River Health in Batesville. Informatics is thinner on the ground but real. Arkansas runs a health information exchange, the State Health Alliance for Records Exchange, or SHARE, through the Office of Health Information Technology at the Arkansas Department of Health, connecting more than 1,700 hospitals, practices, and other providers. Leadership mentors are easiest, because every hospital, nursing home, home health agency, hospice, and county health unit has a master's prepared nurse in charge of other nurses. The Arkansas Department of Health runs local health units statewide, and those offices, community health centers, and school districts in places like Fort Smith, Pine Bluff, Conway, and Texarkana host projects a student can finish in one term. The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
A willing mentor is not a placement. The organization has to agree in writing, and that document is the affiliation agreement between Excelsior and the site, covering supervision, insurance, and liability. Large Arkansas systems route these through a legal office or a central placement coordinator, and review runs for weeks even when the nurse manager is eager. County health units, community health centers, home health and hospice agencies, long-term care, and school districts move faster. Compliance runs in parallel. Excelsior uses CastleBranch, and your site can add requirements on top, which in Arkansas usually means a background check, immunization and titer records, a TB screen, a current BLS card, and sometimes a drug screen. Hours, distance, and how much can be remote
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours with your mentor, your site, and your project. RN-to-BS students complete about 90 hours, split across two 45-hour courses. Hours attach to the project rather than to shifts, which is how most Arkansas students fit them around full-time work. Arkansas is a long drive corner to corner. Texarkana to Jonesboro eats most of a day, and students in the Delta or the Ozarks often have one realistic hospital within an hour, which is why remote and hybrid arrangements are worth raising early. Curriculum work, a policy rewrite, a dashboard build, a workflow analysis, and most of the writing can happen from home when the mentor, the site, and faculty all agree, with on-site time saved for meetings and go-live. Do I need an Arkansas RN license for my practice experience here?
You need a license valid in Arkansas. If Arkansas is your primary state of residence and your license is multistate under the Nurse Licensure Compact, that generally covers you. If you live in a state that is not a compact member, or your Arkansas license is single state, check the Nurse Portal lookup and contact ASBN before your start date. Sites verify this themselves.
How is a practice experience different from clinicals in other programs?
A practice experience is not a clinical rotation, and it is not direct patient care. Excelsior graduate nursing is indirect care, so the work is an independent project supervised by a master's prepared mentor: a curriculum, a dashboard, a policy, a quality initiative. Saying that plainly to an Arkansas organization makes people far more willing to help, because you are asking for a mentor and a project, not a patient assignment. Can my own employer host my practice experience?
Often yes, and it is usually the fastest path, because you are already badged and known. Two conditions still apply. The organization has to sign an affiliation agreement with Excelsior, and your mentor has to be a master's prepared nurse with expertise in your specialization whom faculty will approve, which is not always your direct supervisor. Faculty will also expect the project to be distinct from your everyday assignment.
What if my mentor backs out in the middle of the term?
