Lining up a mentor and a site in Alabama
Excelsior University does not assign your mentor and does not place you at a site, so in Alabama that work lands on you. Here is the practical version: who counts as a mentor, where those nurses work, and what the Alabama Board of Nursing expects of your license.
Your RN license is the first thing an Alabama site checks
Everyone in an Excelsior graduate nursing program is already a licensed RN, so licensure feels settled. It still matters, because the agency hosting your practice experience will look you up before it signs anything. The regulator is the Alabama Board of Nursing, at RSA Plaza in Montgomery, and verification is public: an ABN License Lookup, a subscription service, and Nursys. Pull your own record first, so you know what a nursing dean or compliance office will see.
Renewal runs on the Board's cycle. For single-state Alabama registered nurses the window opens at 8:00 a.m. on September 1 and closes at 4:30 p.m. on December 31 of even-numbered years, with 24 contact hours of continuing education per license period. A lapsed license is a fast way to lose a site you worked hard to get, so check your expiration against your capstone term.
Alabama is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, and the Board began issuing multistate licenses effective January 1, 2020. If Alabama is your primary state of residence, you hold an Alabama license. If it is not, and you hold a valid multistate license from another compact state, the Board's position is that you do not need to add one here. Confirm the current member list at nursecompact.com.
What Excelsior means by mentor, and who that is here
Excelsior uses the word mentor. Some students say preceptor, because that is the word the rest of nursing uses, but the Excelsior requirement is its own thing. Your mentor is a volunteer, master's prepared, with genuine expertise in your specialization. You nominate the person and faculty approves or declines. Nobody at the university hands you a name.
That changes where you look. Graduate nursing at Excelsior is indirect care: nursing education, nursing informatics, and nursing leadership and administration. You are not hunting for someone to supervise patient care, you want a master's prepared nurse who does the work you want to learn. Alabama has more of those than students assume.

Where Alabama mentors tend to sit
- Education: nursing faculty at UAB in Birmingham, the Capstone College of Nursing in Tuscaloosa, the University of South Alabama in Mobile, UAH, Auburn, Troy, Samford, Jacksonville State, and programs across the Alabama Community College System. Hospital staff development departments count too.
- Informatics: UAB Medicine, Huntsville Hospital Health System, USA Health and Infirmary Health in Mobile, DCH Health System in Tuscaloosa, and payer and analytics employers such as Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. In north Alabama, look at the technology employers around Cummings Research Park.
- Leadership and administration: nurse managers, directors, and quality leaders at East Alabama Health in Opelika, Southeast Health in Dothan, Children's of Alabama, Encompass Health, and the Alabama Department of Public Health, which staffs health departments in all 67 counties.
The site, the signature, and CastleBranch
A mentor is only half of it. Your practice experience happens somewhere, and that somewhere has to agree in writing, which means an affiliation agreement between the agency and Excelsior. At a system like UAB Medicine or Huntsville Hospital that routes through a legal or partnerships office. At a county health department it may be one administrator with a full calendar. How many hours you actually owe
Each MSN capstone is 135 practice-experience hours, paired with an independent project you design with your mentor and faculty. If you are finishing the RN-to-BS, the practice experience is about 90 hours, split across two 45-hour courses. Plan your Alabama calendar around those numbers.
The hours are indirect care. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and is not direct patient care, which is why a curriculum redesign, a documentation workflow audit, or a unit-level quality project all fit, while bedside shadowing generally does not. Remote and hybrid arrangements
Alabama is a long state. A student in Florence or Dothan does not have the options a Birmingham student has, and a three hour drive twice a week is how good plans fall apart in week five.
A fair amount of indirect care work can run partly remote when the site and your faculty both agree. Curriculum development, informatics reporting, and quality analysis are the usual candidates. Some agencies here are comfortable with it and some are not, and faculty approval is separate from the agency's willingness. Get both in writing before you count an hour, because nobody can promise a remote arrangement will be approved. If your mentor sits across a state line, read out of state practice experience first.
When the Alabama search stalls
Two things go wrong most often: the search runs out of runway, or a mentor who said yes in March backs out in August. Both are survivable if you move early. Does Excelsior find an Alabama mentor for me?
No. For the graduate specializations and RN-to-BS, you identify the mentor, secure the site, and propose the project. Excelsior does not provide clinical instruction in these programs and does not assign anyone to you. Faculty reviews what you bring, which is a real gate.
I hold a multistate license from another compact state and just moved to Huntsville. Do I need an Alabama license?
If Alabama has become your primary state of residence, yes, and the compact rule is to apply in your new home state within 60 days. If Alabama is not your primary residence, a valid multistate license generally covers practice here. Confirm your own case with the Board.
Can a nurse educator or an informatics manager mentor me if she has not touched a patient in years?
Yes, and she is often the right person. The test is a master's prepared nurse with expertise matching your specialization, not someone delivering patient care. A curriculum coordinator at a Tuscaloosa nursing program or an informatics lead at a Mobile health system fits that far better than a bedside colleague.
I am in the Hybrid BSN or the associate degree program. Does any of this apply to me?
