Lining up your Excelsior mentor and site across Wyoming
Excelsior assigns you no mentor, no practice-experience site, and no project, so in Wyoming you assemble all three yourself out of a small, tightly connected health care community. Knowing which doors to knock on turns that smallness into an advantage.
What you are actually being asked to arrange
Answer first: an Excelsior graduate nursing student in Wyoming needs three approvals before a capstone term opens. A volunteer mentor holding a master's degree or higher, with expertise in your specialization. A host agency willing to sign an affiliation agreement with the university. And an independent project that agency will let you carry out. Excelsior faculty reviews and approves what you bring, and assigns none of it.
That is the design. Excelsior states there is no clinical instruction provided in any of its nursing programs, and the graduate tracks are indirect care: MS in Nursing Education, MS in Nursing Informatics, and MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration, plus the RN-to-MS bridges and the RN-to-BS. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and not direct patient care. Some students still say preceptor out of habit, and they mean the same person. See mentor versus preceptor.
Wyoming changes the search, not the standard. The population is thin and the larger hospitals sit long drives apart, so the pool of master's-prepared candidates is small. It is also legible: most people who fit are within reach of Cheyenne, Casper, Laramie, Gillette, or Sheridan, and a warm introduction travels much further here than a cold email does.
The Wyoming State Board of Nursing and the license behind your hours
Your regulator is the Wyoming State Board of Nursing, which licenses registered nurses under the Nurse Practice Act of Wyoming from its office in Cheyenne. You are already an RN, so your capstone asks the board for no new credential. It matters for a practical reason: the agency hosting your project will confirm your license is active before letting you past the front desk.
Two Wyoming specifics catch students out. The state issues no paper licenses, and a wallet card or wall certificate is not accepted as verification, so when a site asks for documentation, hand over the Nursys record reached through the board's Verify a Nurse route. Second, RN renewal here is biennial and falls in even years, opening October 1 and closing December 31 in the state's Nurse Portal.
Wyoming requires no mandatory continuing education. The board asks for continuing competency instead, satisfied by 400 hours of practice as an RN, 40 hours of continuing education, passing the NCLEX, a refresher course, or a degree beyond your basic nursing education. That last route is worth noticing, since an Excelsior MS is exactly that. Confirm current rules with the board.
Wyoming has been a Nurse Licensure Compact state since implementation on January 19, 2018. If Wyoming is your primary residence you can hold a multistate license issued here, and a multistate license from another compact state is recognized. Who qualifies as a mentor in Wyoming, and where those people work
Excelsior's bar is short: a master's degree or higher, expertise matching your specialization, and willingness to volunteer as your resource. Faculty approves the person you nominate. The mentor need not be a nurse, though for most projects the strongest fit is one.
Wyoming settings that fit each Excelsior track
- Nursing Education. Staff development and clinical education roles at Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, Banner Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, and Sheridan Memorial Hospital, plus faculty at the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing at the University of Wyoming, Casper College, and Laramie County Community College. See education mentors.
- Nursing Informatics. Clinical informatics, analytics, and quality roles inside the larger systems, including Campbell County Health in Gillette and Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie. Your mentor likely sits in a health system's IT, records, or quality department. See informatics mentors.

Naming a place is not the same as having a placement
That list says where the credential you need tends to sit in Wyoming. It is not a claim that any named hospital, college, or agency hosts Excelsior students, keeps an agreement on file, or works with us. Ask rather than assume, and ask your own employer first. The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
A mentor without a site is half an approval. The agency hosting your project has to agree, and in most cases Excelsior and that agency need an affiliation agreement in place before hours begin. In Wyoming, smaller critical access hospitals and county agencies may have nothing on file with Excelsior yet, which means starting from a blank page rather than renewing something.
So start early, and start with a name. Ask your prospective mentor who signs agreements for their organization, then let Excelsior and that person talk directly. Brokering legal terms yourself is the most common way a placement stalls. More on affiliation agreements.

Hours, remote work, and where we come in
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours. Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration share that number, and the RN-to-MS bridges carry it too. Because the work is indirect care, much of it can happen away from a building. Curriculum development, workflow analysis, policy drafting, and quality projects often run partly remote when the site and your faculty both agree. In Wyoming that helps, since it can put a mentor in Cheyenne within reach of a student in Rock Springs or Cody. Do not assume it, though. Remote arrangements are approved case by case, and only your faculty and the host agency can say what counts toward your hours.

You need a license valid wherever you practice. If Wyoming is your primary residence, that is a Wyoming license. Does Excelsior find the mentor for me?
No. Excelsior's School of Nursing provides no clinical instruction in any of its nursing programs, and faculty approves the mentor you nominate rather than assigning one. That holds in Wyoming and everywhere else.
Is Excelsior accredited, and will a Wyoming agency ask?
Excelsior's RN-to-BS and master's nursing programs are accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, or ACEN, and the university is institutionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Agencies do ask before signing a first affiliation agreement, so keep both answers short.
My mentor works in Colorado or Montana. Is that a problem?
Usually not. The work is indirect care and the approval that counts is your faculty's. What changes is paperwork: the affiliation agreement follows the site rather than your home address, and your license has to cover wherever you practice. Give yourself extra runway.
