Excelsior expects you to arrange your own mentor, practice-experience site, and capstone project, and you are allowed to do exactly that. This page is a fair look at both roads: the do-it-yourself search and our placement service. We will not pretend the DIY path is impossible or that a service is always the answer, because for some students it plainly is not. What we will do is lay out the real trade-offs on time, stress, approval risk, and cost, so you can decide with clear eyes.
What are you actually being asked to arrange?
Before comparing the two paths, it helps to be exact about the job. There is no clinical instruction provided in any program in the School of Nursing at Excelsior, so the university does not assign you anyone. For your MSN capstone you personally line up three things, and your faculty then approves them. First, a mentor with a master's degree or higher and expertise in your specialization, who volunteers with no fee. Second, a practice-experience site, plus any affiliation agreement and the CastleBranch compliance the site requires, meaning a background check, drug screen, and immunizations. Third, an independent capstone project the site will host and your faculty will approve, built around 135 practice-experience hours.
Excelsior uses the words mentor and practice experience, not preceptor and clinical rotation, and this is indirect-care graduate work, not nurse-practitioner patient care. That distinction matters for both paths, because it shapes who counts as a qualified mentor and what a workable project looks like. Whichever road you take, faculty makes the final call.

When does finding your own mentor make sense?
Doing it yourself makes real sense for a lot of students, and we would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise. If you already work in a setting that fits your track, and you know a colleague with a master's degree or higher in your specialization who is willing to volunteer, you may be most of the way there already. Excelsior even allows practice experiences in your own workplace, subject to faculty approval and conflict-of-interest rules, so the site question can answer itself. In that situation, a service would mostly be arranging what you can arrange in an afternoon.
The DIY path also keeps every dollar in your pocket, since there is no service fee, and it gives you full control over who mentors you. The honest downsides are the ones anyone doing it should plan for.

You stay in the approval seat the whole time and start only once you are comfortable.
We are also clear about our limits, because an honest comparison needs them. We do not pay your mentor, who volunteers. We do not guarantee faculty approval, because only your Excelsior faculty approves your mentor, site, and project. And we do not serve the prelicensure hybrid BSN in St. Petersburg, Florida or the AAS clinicals, which Excelsior arranges itself. Can I find my own Excelsior mentor and site without a service?
Yes. Excelsior expects you to. The requirement is that you identify a mentor with a master's degree or higher and specialization expertise who volunteers, arrange a practice-experience site, and design a capstone project, all of which faculty then approves. Plenty of students do this on their own, especially if they already work somewhere that fits and know a qualified colleague willing to mentor. A service is a convenience, not a requirement.
