Setting up an Excelsior practice experience in Vermont
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program, so a Vermont student assembles the whole arrangement: a mentor, a host agency, and a project. Here is how that comes together between Burlington and Brattleboro.
What the search actually looks like here
The graduate specializations are indirect care degrees: MS in Nursing Education, MS in Nursing Informatics, and MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration of Health Care Systems, plus the RN to MS bridges. The capstone is a project you carry out inside a real organization, guided by someone who already does that work. You find the mentor and the site. Faculty approves rather than assigns.
Vermont shapes that search two ways. The network is small and genuinely connected, so one good email to a nurse educator in Berlin reaches three more names by Friday. It also means the obvious people get asked constantly, so be specific about what you need.
Vocabulary matters when you approach a hospital. Excelsior's word is mentor, and the work is a practice experience. Some students call it a preceptor, because that is what people search for. Your RN license and the Vermont State Board of Nursing
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Vermont State Board of Nursing, inside the Office of Professional Regulation at the Secretary of State in Montpelier. Applications, renewals, verifications, and status checks run through the OPR online services system rather than a separate board portal. RN renewals fall on March 31 of odd numbered years.
Vermont implemented the Nurse Licensure Compact on February 1, 2022. If Vermont is your primary residence you can add the multistate designation to your license. If you live in another compact state and hold a multistate license, you already have practice privileges here. Coming from a state outside the compact, you apply to OPR directly.
Expect the host agency to check all of this before you set foot in a unit, a data warehouse, or a curriculum committee. Credentialing staff run your name through the state license lookup and want to see an active, unencumbered license.
Where Vermont mentors actually work
You need a mentor prepared at the master's level or above with real expertise in your specialization: education, informatics, or leadership. Faculty approves your nominee, so find someone whose day job matches your capstone and document it well.
Realistic places to look
- Network hospitals: the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, and Porter Medical Center in Middlebury employ nurse educators, informatics staff, and nurse managers.
- Community hospitals: Rutland Regional Medical Center, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Copley Hospital in Morrisville, and Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.
- Nursing programs: the University of Vermont, Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont State University, and Community College of Vermont, which suit an education capstone.
- Public health: Vermont Department of Health district offices from Barre and Rutland to St. Johnsbury, Newport, and White River Junction.
- Health data: Vermont Information Technology Leaders, the statewide health information exchange in Burlington, and community health centers such as the Community Health Centers of Burlington.
- Federal, home health, and long term care: the White River Junction VA Medical Center and skilled nursing facilities often have master's prepared educators who answer email quickly.
The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
A willing mentor is half of it. The agency has to agree to host you, and an affiliation agreement must be in place between Excelsior and that organization before hours count. Where the site has hosted Excelsior students before, this moves fast. Where it has not, the review may sit with one person who also handles four other things.
Then onboarding: background check, immunization records, TB screening, seasonal flu requirements, privacy and safety modules, sometimes a badge and a record system login. Vermont borders three states, so students in Windsor, White River Junction, or Bennington often find the nearest realistic site in New Hampshire, New York, or Massachusetts. That works, it just adds a licensure question and a second agreement. Read out of state practice experience first.
The hours, stated plainly
Each master's capstone carries 135 practice experience hours, roughly ten to twelve hours a week across a term, which is manageable only if the project and the site are settled before the term opens. RN to BS is lighter, about 90 hours arranged as two 45 hour courses. Both numbers sit on practice experience hours.
One point of honesty about who we serve. Excelsior arranges clinical placement itself for its prelicensure hybrid bachelor's program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and for its associate degree program. Our work is with graduate capstone students and RN to BS students, the ones expected to source a mentor and a site themselves.
Remote hours, distance, and Vermont winters
Much indirect care work happens away from the building: designing a teaching module, cleaning a data set, drafting a policy, running committee meetings by video. Whether those hours count is a decision for your site and your faculty together, and you want that answer in writing before planning a term around it. We will never tell you remote hours are approved.
Distance is a real constraint where a 60 mile commute crosses two mountain gaps. A plan that requires driving Newport to Burlington twice a week in January breaks in February. If a project can be partly remote with one day on site, say so when you pitch it.

Where faculty sometimes pushes back is a mentor who is also your direct supervisor for the same work, since the capstone has to be identifiably yours. Ask before you commit.
How early should I start looking in Vermont?
Earlier than feels necessary, and the reason is paperwork rather than people. Finding a willing nurse educator takes a couple of weeks. Getting a fresh affiliation agreement signed at a small hospital takes considerably longer. For a fall term, having a name and an agency by early summer is comfortable. My mentor took another job halfway through the term. What now?
Tell your faculty that week, because a replacement needs the same approval the original did. If the new mentor is at the same agency, the affiliation agreement usually still stands. If the agency changes, that piece starts over. See replacing a mentor who backed out.
