Independent mentor & practice-experience placement for Excelsior MSN and RN-to-BS students Live chat
Utah placement

Lining up your mentor, your site, and your project in Utah

Excelsior hands you the practice experience as an assignment rather than a placement. You find the master's prepared mentor, you secure the Utah agency, you shape the project, and faculty approves what you bring, so this page starts with the board that holds your license and ends with the people in this state who actually qualify.

Utah is an NLC member (Nurse Licensure Compact). Excelsior practice experience is indirect care, 135 hours for an MSN capstone and about 90 for RN to BS.
Utah is a Nurse Licensure Compact member. A compact member; multistate license for residents.

What Excelsior leaves to you

Excelsior's School of Nursing provides no clinical instruction in any program and assigns no one to you. An MSN capstone puts three jobs on your desk at once: a volunteer mentor holding a master's degree or higher with expertise in your specialization, a Utah agency that will host the work and sign an affiliation agreement, and an independent project. Faculty approves your nominee. Faculty does not go find one.

None of it is direct patient care. Excelsior's graduate tracks are indirect care, so a practice experience is not a clinical rotation, it is project work in education, informatics, or leadership done beside somebody who already holds that job. Plenty of students still say preceptor out of habit; the requirement is identical. Mentor vs preceptor untangles the wording.

Your license, the Utah Board of Nursing, and the compact

You arrive already licensed, so the regulator that matters is the one holding your RN license. In Utah that is the Board of Nursing, which sits inside the Utah Division of Professional Licensing, known as DOPL, in the Department of Commerce. DOPL runs applications, renewals, discipline, and the public license lookup that host agencies use.

Utah nursing licenses run on a two-year cycle ending January 31 of odd-numbered years, and DOPL sets the continuing competency you show at renewal. Check your own expiration date before you commit to a capstone term, because a lapse mid-experience stops everything.

Utah is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a Utah resident may hold a multistate license. If you moved here from another compact state, your primary state of residence, and therefore your license, may need to follow you. Settle that before an agency runs your credentials.

Expect that check. Hospitals, universities, and county health departments all verify licensure through DOPL's lookup before you touch a badge or a record system.

Who qualifies as a mentor here, and where they work

Excelsior's bar is short: a master's degree or higher, expertise in your specialization, and a willingness to volunteer. Faculty judges that person against the project you proposed. Most large employers sit along the Wasatch Front, from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo, so students in that band have a dense pool nearby.

Outside the corridor the search has to start earlier. In San Juan County, the Uinta Basin, or the west desert, fewer master's prepared people sit within driving distance, so define the site broadly. Critical access hospitals and Utah Navajo Health System employ graduate-prepared leaders nobody has asked.

Where Utah mentors tend to work, by track

  • Nursing Education. Staff development and clinical education at Intermountain Health, University of Utah Health, and MountainStar Healthcare, plus faculty at the University of Utah College of Nursing, Brigham Young University, Weber State University, and Utah Valley University. See nursing education placement.
  • Nursing Informatics. Clinical informatics and analytics teams at Intermountain Health and University of Utah Health, the biomedical informatics community around the University of Utah, the Utah Health Information Network, and health data firms in the Silicon Slopes corridor. See informatics placement.
  • Nursing Leadership and Administration. Nurse managers, directors, and quality leaders at Utah Valley Hospital in Provo, McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Logan Regional Hospital, Primary Children's Hospital and the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City, and Moab Regional Hospital. See leadership placement.
  • Public health, useful for any track. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services, the Salt Lake County and Utah County health departments, Weber-Morgan Health Department, and Southwest Utah Public Health Department in St. George.

The site, the agreement, and CastleBranch

The mentor is what students worry about. The affiliation agreement is what eats the calendar. Excelsior and the host agency need a signed agreement before you begin, and inside a large Utah system that document does not stop with the nurse leader who said yes. It routes to a contracts or legal office. Weeks, not days. Our affiliation agreement guide covers what stalls.

Smaller Utah organizations often move faster. A county health department, a community clinic, a critical access hospital, or a school district health services office may have one administrator who can sign, though with no template on file someone reads the document carefully the first time. Agencies sometimes ask about accreditation too: Excelsior's nursing programs are ACEN accredited, and the university is institutionally accredited by MSCHE.

Compliance runs through CastleBranch: background check, immunization records, drug screen where the site requires one, plus whatever onboarding the agency adds. Utah systems commonly want their own badge, orientation module, and record system access, and access often takes longer than paperwork. CastleBranch compliance lists the uploads.

Hours, remote work, and the timeline that actually bites

The number to plan around is 135. Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice-experience hours with your approved mentor and your independent project. RN-to-BS students are looking at roughly 90, split across two 45-hour courses. That is smaller than most students fear, which is the point: this is a sourcing problem, not an hours problem. Practice-experience hours has the detail.

Because the work is indirect care, part of it can sometimes happen remotely or on a hybrid schedule when the site and your faculty agree. Curriculum revisions, dashboard builds, policy rewrites, and staffing analyses do not require standing on a unit, which matters in a state this spread out. Do not assume it, though. Get it in writing from your faculty and the host agency before you log an hour.

Students rarely fail a capstone. They miss a term because a mentor never replied or an agreement sat in a queue. If your term is a few months out and you have no name and no site, that is the moment to get help. We source master's prepared Utah mentors, verify the credential and specialization fit, open the agreement conversation, and shape a project faculty will approve. We never guarantee Excelsior's approval of a mentor or site. Get matched and tell us your track and term.

Questions

Answered

Does my practice experience have to be in Utah?

Usually, because you complete it as a licensed nurse and the host agency verifies your license with DOPL before you start. If the practical site is over the Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona, or Colorado line, or you hold licenses in more than one state, tell us. Out-of-state practice experience explains how that works.

Can my mentor be someone at my own Utah employer?

Often that is the fastest route. If a master's prepared educator, informaticist, or nurse leader where you already work has the specialization expertise and will volunteer, nominate them. Faculty still approves the fit, and you still need an affiliation agreement even at your own employer.

Is Utah in the Nurse Licensure Compact?

Yes. A nurse whose primary state of residence is Utah may hold a multistate license under the compact. Confirm your own license type on DOPL's public lookup, and note that a multistate license does not remove a host agency's onboarding and background requirements.

How far ahead should I start in Utah?

Give yourself months, not weeks. The affiliation agreement is usually the long pole, especially at a large Salt Lake City system where it routes through legal review. Mentor outreach runs alongside it. Start CastleBranch first, since immunization records and titers depend on other people's calendars.
