Setting up your Excelsior practice experience in Missouri
Excelsior does not assign you a mentor or a site for its graduate nursing degrees, so a student in St. Louis, Kansas City, or a county seat in the Bootheel builds the whole arrangement from scratch. Here is how that goes in Missouri, and where we pick up the work.
The three pieces you have to put together yourself
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. For the indirect care master's degrees, MS in Nursing Education, MS in Nursing Informatics, and MS in Nursing Leadership and Administration, that is not a hole in the teaching. It means the practical half of your capstone is yours to source.
One honest caveat. Excelsior does arrange placement for its prelicensure students, the hybrid BS program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the associate degree track. This page is not for them. It is for the working RN in Missouri finishing a master's capstone or the practice experience courses inside RN to BS.
What has to exist before your capstone term opens
- A mentor with a master's degree or higher and real expertise in your specialization, nominated by you and approved by faculty.
- A Missouri agency willing to host you and sign an affiliation agreement with the university.
- A project the agency actually wants done, scoped to your course outcomes.
- Compliance cleared through CastleBranch, plus anything the host adds.
Your RN license and the Missouri State Board of Nursing
Everyone in these programs is already licensed, so the regulator that matters is the Missouri State Board of Nursing, inside the Division of Professional Registration in Jefferson City. Before an education office signs anything, somebody there will look you up, through the board's online verification or through Nursys, the national license database.
Missouri RN licenses run on a two year cycle closing April 30 of odd numbered years, and renewal goes through the board's portal. Enrolling in Nursys e-Notify is free and worth the two minutes, because an expiration landing in week six of a 135 hour project costs a whole term.
Missouri is a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license issued here travels to other compact jurisdictions. Missouri borders eight states and their statuses are not identical, so if your site sits in Kansas City, Kansas, or across the Mississippi in Illinois, confirm that state on nursecompact.com and read out of state practice experience.
Who qualifies as a mentor, and where those nurses work here
The bar is a master's prepared nurse whose expertise matches your specialization. You find the person and put the name forward. Faculty approves the nominee; faculty does not go recruiting for you. Excelsior's word for the role is mentor, though most students, and nearly every manager you email, will say preceptor. Both get you to the same conversation, and mentor vs preceptor has the distinction.
Missouri gives you a wide field, with two large metro health markets, a real health technology employer base, and a dense network of public health agencies.
Where the right credential tends to sit
- Education: faculty and staff development educators at the University of Missouri Sinclair School of Nursing in Columbia, the UMKC School of Nursing and Health Studies, Saint Louis University, Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College, Missouri State University in Springfield, and community college programs from Ozarks Technical to Metropolitan Community College. - Public health: the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services in Jefferson City, plus local agencies such as Springfield-Greene County, Columbia/Boone County, St. Louis County, and Kansas City.
The site, the agreement, and compliance
Hours do not count until Excelsior and the host agency have an agreement in place, and that one document is where most Missouri timelines slip.
Large St. Louis and Kansas City systems generally route outside student requests through a central education or academic partnerships office, so your request joins a queue and moves at the pace of legal review. Smaller organizations behave differently. County health departments, critical access hospitals, community health centers, hospice and long term care providers, and school districts often answer within days, because one or two people can simply say yes. If your term starts in ten weeks, work both tracks at once.
When an agency asks who accredits your program, the answer is ACEN for the nursing degrees, with MSCHE as Excelsior's institutional accreditor. Compliance runs through CastleBranch: background check, immunization records, TB screening, and whatever else your program lists. Order the package as soon as you have a target site rather than waiting on signatures.
Hours, the project, and what can happen remotely
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. RN to BS students do roughly 90, split across two 45 hour courses. At twelve hours a week around a full time nursing job, 135 hours is about eleven weeks, which is why an August start really means a June search. See practice experience hours.
The project is not shadowing. It is defined work with a deliverable the agency can use: a revised orientation module for education students, a documentation workflow review or data quality audit for informatics students, a throughput, staffing, or retention initiative for leadership students. Because this is indirect care rather than bedside work, a meaningful share of it can often run remotely or on a hybrid schedule when the site and your faculty both agree. Committee time, data and chart review, curriculum drafting, and analytics travel well. Do not plan around that until your program confirms it for your course, and remember that nobody at a Missouri health system can approve hours on Excelsior's behalf.
