Excelsior University nursing students in Mississippi assemble the practice experience themselves: a master's prepared volunteer mentor, an agency willing to host the work, and a project worth finishing. Here is how those pieces come together in this state.
The three pieces you have to produce
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Treat that as a job description, not a brush off. You nominate the mentor, find the agency, and propose the project; faculty approves what you bring. Nobody in Jackson is holding a slot with your name on it.
Excelsior's word is mentor, though some students call it a preceptor because that is what the rest of nursing says. Graduate nursing here is indirect care: MS in Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, Nursing Leadership and Administration, the RN-to-MS bridges, and RN-to-BS. You are not placed to carry a patient assignment. You are placed to do education, informatics, quality, or leadership work beside someone who already does it well. Your RN license and the Mississippi Board of Nursing
You are already a licensed RN, so the regulator that matters is the Mississippi Board of Nursing, a consumer protection agency with authority to regulate the practice of nursing through licensure under Mississippi state code, with offices on Pear Orchard Road in Ridgeland.

The bar is master's prepared, genuine expertise in your specialization, and acceptable to your faculty. Faculty approves the nominee you bring; it does not go find one. Your mentor should look like the job you are studying for.
Where to look, by track
- Nursing education: program directors, staff development specialists, and faculty with graduate degrees. Try the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Nursing in Jackson, the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, William Carey University in Hattiesburg and Biloxi, Mississippi University for Women in Columbus, Delta State University in Cleveland, and nursing faculty at Hinds, Itawamba, and Mississippi Gulf Coast community colleges.
- Nursing informatics: informatics nurses, EHR analysts, and clinical applications leads inside systems large enough to employ them. UMMC in Jackson, North Mississippi Health Services in Tupelo, Forrest Health in Hattiesburg, Memorial in Gulfport, Singing River on the coast, Baptist Memorial's DeSoto County hospital in Southaven, and St. Dominic in Jackson. The hours, stated honestly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours, paired with an independent project you design with your mentor and your faculty. That figure is per capstone. RN-to-BS is lighter at roughly 90 hours, split across two 45 hour courses.
Across a term, 135 hours is one standing weekly block plus project time at your own desk. Nurses working three twelves in Jackson, Tupelo, or Gulfport usually pick a consistent day with the mentor and keep the writing for off days. Timelines rarely break on the hour count. Remote and hybrid work, and when to ask
Indirect care work is partly remote by nature. Curriculum revision, a dashboard build, chart audits, policy rewrites, survey readiness, a needs assessment: much of it happens in a document rather than a hallway. That appeals in a state where a student in Cleveland or Corinth may be two hours from an organization big enough to host the project they want.

How far ahead should I start looking?
A full term. Confirming a mentor takes weeks of real outreach, the affiliation agreement commonly runs two to six weeks through legal or risk, and a TB screen or titer can add another week.
