Lining up a mentor and a practice site in Michigan
Excelsior asks graduate nursing students to bring their own mentor, their own agency, and their own project. Here is how a Michigan student assembles all three, starting with the board that holds your RN license.
What Excelsior asks you to produce
Excelsior's graduate nursing degrees are indirect care degrees. The MS in Nursing Education, Nursing Informatics, and Nursing Leadership and Administration each end in a capstone practice experience of 135 hours, and the RN to BS sequence carries about 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in its School of Nursing programs, which is another way of saying nobody hands you a placement.
Three pieces must be standing before your capstone term opens: a master's prepared volunteer mentor working in your area of study, a host agency with a signed affiliation agreement, and a project your faculty approves. Faculty approves the mentor you nominate. Faculty does not go find one. Some students say preceptor because that is the word the rest of nursing uses, so keep both handy when you call around Michigan.
Settle one thing early. A capstone practice experience is not direct patient care, and it is not a clinical rotation. Your license and the Michigan Board of Nursing
The Michigan Board of Nursing sits inside the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, Bureau of Professional Licensing, in Lansing. Michigan calls the credential a registered professional nurse license. Applications and renewals run through MiPLUS, the state's online licensing system, on a two year cycle with continuing education attached. Michigan runs its own license lookup, so a compliance office in Detroit or Grand Rapids pulls your record from the state system directly. Expect that check every time, since no agency issues a badge or a seat in a chart review without it. Keep your name consistent across license, school record, and onboarding forms, because mismatches stall paperwork.
Michigan is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state at the time of writing. Legislation to join has been introduced in Lansing, but the state does not issue multistate licenses, and a multistate license held elsewhere does not by itself carry into Michigan. Who qualifies as a mentor, and where they work
Your mentor holds a master's degree or higher, has expertise in the specialization you are studying, volunteers the time, and is acceptable to your faculty. Title matters less than the match between what that person does all day and what your degree is about. Supply concentrates in the southeast corridor, the west side from Grand Rapids to Kalamazoo, and the Lansing to Saginaw belt, with thinner options up north.
Where Michigan students find a match
- Education. Nursing professional development offices at Henry Ford Health in Detroit, Corewell Health, University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor, Bronson Healthcare in Kalamazoo, and Munson Healthcare in Traverse City, plus nursing faculty at Wayne State, Michigan State, Grand Valley State, Oakland University, and Northern Michigan University in Marquette.
- Informatics. Clinical informatics and analytics teams inside those systems, the statewide exchange run by Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services, and payer analytics at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Priority Health in Grand Rapids.
- Leadership. Nurse managers and quality directors at McLaren Health Care around Flint, Trinity Health in Livonia and Ann Arbor, MyMichigan Health in Midland, and UP Health System in Marquette.
- Public health. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services in Lansing, and county health departments in Detroit, Oakland, Kent, Ingham, and Washtenaw counties.

Start with your own employer. If you already work for a large Michigan system, your mentor may be two floors away and your badge and immunization file already exist. The hours and the project
Each MSN capstone is 135 practice experience hours with your approved mentor, near nine to twelve hours a week across a term. RN to BS students carry roughly 90 hours split between two 45 hour courses. Practice experience hours works through the arithmetic, and RN to BS practice experience covers the bachelor's version.
Pick a project your host actually wants. Michigan education students have built unit onboarding curricula and competency validation for float pools. Informatics students have redesigned documentation flows and audited data capture with an analytics team. Leadership students have worked throughput, scheduling, and retention with a nurse manager in Flint or Saginaw, or evaluated an outreach program with a county health department. Distance, remote work, and an empty local pool
Michigan is a long state. A student in Marquette, Sault Ste. Marie, or Alpena has a different problem than one in Warren with six hospitals inside twenty minutes. Indirect care work does travel: curriculum drafting, policy review, dashboard design, chart audit, and quality analysis can often run partly remote when the host agency agrees and your faculty approves the plan in advance. Get that in writing before the term starts, and never assume hours count because they felt productive. Faculty decides, not your mentor and not us.

I hold an out of state RN license and live in Michigan. Is that a problem?
It can be. Michigan is not currently a compact state, so a multistate license from elsewhere does not automatically authorize practice here, and agencies verify licensure before onboarding. Can my own manager be my mentor?
