Your mentor holds a master's degree or higher. A bachelor's-prepared colleague, however experienced, does not meet the bar for an MSN capstone mentor, so aim above your own current level.
Specialization expertise
The mentor has real expertise in your track. An education mentor should work in staff development or academic teaching; an informatics mentor in health data systems; a leadership mentor in nursing management.
A willing volunteer
The mentor serves without a fee. Excelsior frames the role as a volunteer resource, not a paid supervisor, so the ask is for their time and guidance across your project, not a contract.
Excelsior's word for this person is mentor, not preceptor, and the experience is a practice experience, not a clinical rotation. Some students still call it a preceptor out of habit, and that is fine, but there is no direct patient care at the graduate level here.
How does faculty approval actually work?
Faculty approves the mentor you bring; it does not go find one for you. In practice you submit your proposed mentor and site to your Excelsior faculty, usually with the mentor's credentials and a short description of the setting and the independent project you intend to run. Faculty then confirms a few things before you can log a single hour.

- The site or setting can actually host the project you have scoped.

Because approval sits between you and the start of your hours, a mentor who looks perfect can still be turned back if a piece is missing, for example a supervisor who creates a conflict or a project the site cannot support. Does the mentor requirement apply to the RN-to-BS program?
The RN-to-BS practice experiences work differently from the MSN capstone. The RN-to-BS adds roughly 90 practice-experience hours across NUR448 Community Health and the NUR462 capstone, and NUR342 uses a live adult volunteer. You still arrange these experiences yourself in your own community, but the graduate-degree mentor rule described here is specific to the MSN capstone courses.
