Lining up your Excelsior mentor and practice experience in Delaware
Excelsior does not assign your mentor or your site. In Delaware that means you are the one finding a master's prepared mentor, an agency willing to sign an affiliation agreement, and a project big enough to fill 135 hours.
The three pieces you have to bring
Every Excelsior graduate nursing capstone rests on three things you supply yourself: a mentor who agrees to guide you, a site that agrees to host you, and a project that matters to that site. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. Faculty approve what you propose. They do not go find it.
The work is indirect care. A practice experience is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. Depending on your specialization you are building curriculum, fixing a documentation workflow, standing up a dashboard, or running a quality initiative. Some students call it a preceptor arrangement, because that is the word the rest of nursing uses, but Excelsior's word is mentor, and the difference matters when you ask a Delaware agency for access. Your license, and the board that holds it
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Delaware Board of Nursing, part of the Division of Professional Regulation at the Delaware Department of State. Applications, renewals, and public license verification all run through DELPROS, the state's online system. Delaware RN licenses expire on February 28, May 31, or September 30 of odd-numbered years depending on when the license was first issued, and newly issued RN licenses expire September 30 of an odd year. Check yours before you approach a host site, because an expiration landing mid-capstone is an easy way to lose badge access halfway through your hours.
Delaware is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. A multistate Delaware license covers practice in other compact jurisdictions, and it requires Delaware as your primary state of residence, the compact's uniform licensure requirements, and Delaware plus FBI background checks. Miss any requirement and you get a single state license valid only in Delaware. Move your residence to another compact state and the Board expects you to apply there within 60 days.
Participation differs by state and dates shift, so confirm current status at nursecompact.com. Plenty of Delaware nurses live in one state and work in another, and a Wilmington host agency will verify your license before issuing a badge. That check is not about Excelsior. It is the agency confirming you are a licensed nurse in good standing.
Where Delaware mentors actually work
Your mentor must be master's prepared with real expertise in your specialization. You nominate, faculty approve or decline, nobody assigns. The search is really for one person with the credential, the subject fit, and calendar space to meet you through a term.
Where to look, by specialization
- Nursing education: faculty and clinical education staff at the University of Delaware School of Nursing in Newark, Delaware State University in Dover, Wilmington University, and the Delaware Technical Community College nursing campuses in Stanton, Dover, and Georgetown. - Nursing informatics: the Delaware Health Information Network, the statewide health information exchange live since 2007, is an unusual asset for a state this size. - Community and public settings: the Delaware Division of Public Health within Delaware Health and Social Services, school districts, long term care organizations, and community health centers across New Castle, Kent, and Sussex counties. Often the most receptive, and the least crowded with students.
The site, the agreement, and CastleBranch
A willing mentor is not a willing site. Larger Delaware employers route student requests through education, legal, or risk offices, and they want a signed affiliation agreement between the organization and Excelsior before you set foot in the building. Smaller agencies, a school district or a county program, sometimes have no template and need walking through it.
That takes real calendar time, longer if legal review is backed up or the site has never hosted an Excelsior student. Start it the same week your mentor says yes, not the week before the term opens. How affiliation agreements work covers the document.
Excelsior uses CastleBranch: background check, immunization records, and whatever the site stacks on top, such as badge access, an orientation module, or an information security agreement if you will touch the electronic record. Delaware health systems take data access seriously, especially for informatics projects. Get your file clean early, because one missing titer stops everything.
How many hours, and what should fill them
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours with an approved mentor. Excelsior does not award hours beyond that, and you cannot carry extra forward from an earlier course. RN-to-BS is a different shape, roughly 90 hours across two 45 hour courses, and usually easier to place because one department can absorb it. See RN-to-BS practice experience.
Across a term, 135 hours is about ten hours a week, workable alongside a Delaware nursing job when the project is scoped honestly. It falls apart when the project is vague. Students who finish clean pick something the site already wanted done: an onboarding curriculum that keeps getting deferred, a workflow nobody has time to fix, a throughput question a director has been circling. Remote work, and where we come in
Indirect care travels better than bedside work. Curriculum design, data analysis, policy revision, and much of a quality or leadership project can be done from home when the site agrees and your faculty approves. That helps in Delaware, where a nurse in Sussex County may be well over an hour from a mentor in Wilmington. Do not assume it. Write the split into your proposal, confirm it with course faculty, and expect some onsite presence for anything touching the electronic record.

Does Excelsior find my Delaware mentor for me?
No. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program. You nominate a master's prepared mentor with expertise in your specialization, and faculty approve or decline. One honest exception: Excelsior does arrange clinical placement for its prelicensure Hybrid BSN program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and for its associate degree program. Does my Delaware mentor have to be a nurse?
Your mentor must be master's prepared with expertise matching your specialization: education, informatics, or leadership and administration. In practice that is nearly always a nurse, because the competencies you are assessed against are nursing competencies. Some informatics roles in Delaware are held by people with health IT or public health backgrounds instead. Ask your course faculty first, since faculty approval is the only opinion that decides it.
I live in Maryland or Pennsylvania but want my hours in Delaware. Is that a problem?
Usually not, and it is common here given how many nurses cross state lines to work. What matters is that you hold a license authorizing practice where the practice experience physically happens, and that the host agency accepts it. How far ahead should I start looking?
One full term ahead is a sensible floor. The mentor conversation can happen in a week, but the affiliation agreement and CastleBranch clearance are slow, and neither is under your control. Delaware's short list of large employers means the departments that host students are asked often.
