How Colorado students line up an Excelsior nursing mentor
Excelsior does not assign you a mentor, a site, or a project. If you are a Colorado RN finishing an MS in Nursing Education, Informatics, or Leadership, or the RN to BS practice experience, you assemble the placement yourself.
The three approvals you are really chasing
Your capstone is not one task, it is three. You need a mentor faculty will sign off on, a site willing to host you and sign paperwork with the university, and a project that matters enough to that site for a busy person to spend real time on it. Miss one and the term does not start.
Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program, so the sourcing is yours and faculty approve what you bring. Your RN license, the Colorado board, and why a site checks it
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Colorado State Board of Nursing, inside the Division of Professions and Occupations at the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies. Applications, renewals, and rule changes live on the board's pages at dpo.colorado.gov, and Colorado routes license verification through Nursys.
Colorado is a Nurse Licensure Compact state. Senate Bill 18-027, signed in January 2018, brought Colorado into the compact, so a nurse whose primary state of residence is Colorado can hold a multistate license and practice on it in other compact states. If Colorado is not your primary residence, a different board governs you, so read the state's compact page rather than assuming.
A host agency's education office, HR, or risk manager confirms your license is active and unencumbered before forwarding your request to anyone who can say yes. Renew on time and pull your own verification early, so you can hand it over the day it is asked for.
Who qualifies as a mentor, and where those people work here
Your mentor must be master's prepared with expertise in your specialization, and faculty approve the nominee you propose. That filter is narrower than it looks. It rules out the excellent charge nurse with a bachelor's and the physician who kindly volunteered. You are running a specialization search, not a hospital search.
Start with people who already know you. A nurse with a few years on the Front Range usually has a former unit educator, a manager who moved into quality, or a classmate who fits, and a warm ask converts far better than a cold note to a general inbox. Where Colorado mentors tend to be found
- Nursing education: professional development and clinical education departments at UCHealth, Denver Health, Children's Hospital Colorado, Intermountain Health, CommonSpirit Health, and Banner Health, plus faculty at the University of Colorado College of Nursing in Aurora, the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Beth-El College of Nursing at UCCS, Regis University, and community college nursing programs from Pueblo to Fort Collins.
- Nursing informatics: clinical informatics and analytics teams inside the large Front Range systems, nurses working on electronic record builds and optimization, and health information exchange work through Contexture, which runs Colorado's exchange from a Denver office.
- Leadership and administration: nurse managers, directors, quality and patient safety leaders, and accreditation coordinators, including at Boulder Community Health, Craig Hospital in Englewood, National Jewish Health, and critical access hospitals across the Western Slope, the San Luis Valley, and the Eastern Plains.
- Public health: the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Denver Department of Public Health and Environment, and county agencies such as Jefferson County Public Health, Boulder County Public Health, El Paso County Public Health, and Mesa County Public Health.
Getting a Colorado site to yes
A willing mentor is not yet a placement. The organization has to agree to host you, which usually means an affiliation agreement with Excelsior. Large Colorado systems route these through legal or academic partnership offices and prefer their own template, which takes weeks. Small clinics, county agencies, and rural hospitals often have no template and need one handed to them. Either way, start the day your mentor says yes. See affiliation agreement.
Compliance runs in parallel. The hours, counted honestly
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours. That is the number to plan around for MS Nursing Education, MS Nursing Informatics, and MS Nursing Leadership and Administration of Health Care Systems, including the RN to MS bridges. At the bachelor's level, the RN to BS practice experience runs about 90 hours, across two 45 hour courses.
Across a term, 135 hours is roughly ten to twelve hours a week, which most working Colorado nurses can fit around three twelves when the mentor is flexible about timing. What sinks people is starting late and compressing the hours into the last six weeks while a deliverable is also due. Practice experience hours has the math, and capstone project covers scoping.
These are project and specialization hours, not direct patient care. You are building curriculum, running a workflow analysis, or driving a quality or staffing initiative, with a mentor guiding the work.
Distance, weather, and remote work in a wide state
Colorado spreads a modest population across a very large map. A nurse in Alamosa, Craig, Durango, Sterling, or Lamar can be hours from the nearest master's prepared informatics or education specialist, and mountain passes make a standing weekly in person commitment unrealistic from November through March. That geography is the most common reason a Colorado placement stalls.
Indirect care work travels well, though. Curriculum development, policy and competency revision, data review, workflow mapping, and quality projects can often run partly remote or hybrid when the site and your faculty both agree. Get that in writing before you build a plan around it. We cannot promise any arrangement will be approved, and neither can a mentor. Does Excelsior find my mentor for me in Colorado?
No. Excelsior states that no clinical instruction is provided in any School of Nursing program, so you identify the mentor, the site, and the project, and faculty approve what you bring forward. One honest exception: the prelicensure hybrid BS program in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the associate program do have arranged placements. Do I need a Colorado RN license if my site is here?
You need an active, unencumbered license covering practice in the state where the site sits. Colorado is a compact state, so a multistate license issued by your primary state of residence may already cover you, while a single state license from elsewhere generally will not. Confirm your status with the Colorado State Board of Nursing before committing to a site.
Can my Colorado employer host my practice experience?
Often yes, and it is usually the fastest route, since you already have badge access, record access, and a manager who knows your work. The usual conditions are that the project sits outside your paid duties, your mentor meets the degree and specialization requirement, and the affiliation agreement is still signed. How far ahead should a Colorado student start looking?
Three to four months before the term is a fair target. The ask itself can be quick, but legal review at a large Front Range system, plus CastleBranch and site onboarding, can eat eight to ten weeks. Rural agencies stall for the opposite reason, since one person handles every request. Inside that window, see need a mentor fast or mentor backed out.
