Can your own workplace be your Excelsior practice-experience site?

Often yes, and for many working nurses it is the most practical choice. Excelsior practice experiences are completed in your own community, and your own employer can be that community, subject to faculty approval and conflict-of-interest rules. This page explains when a workplace site works, when it does not, and how to frame it so your faculty says yes.

Why it is even possible

Why does a workplace site work for Excelsior at all?

It works because Excelsior graduate nursing is indirect-care work, not a nurse-practitioner rotation. There is no clinical instruction provided in any program in the School of Nursing, and each MSN capstone is built around an independent project and 135 practice-experience hours with a volunteer mentor you source, not around hands-on patient care under supervision. Excelsior offers no NP, no APRN, and no DNP, so nobody is asking you to practice medicine at your job. That single fact is what makes your own employer a realistic home for the work: a quality-improvement project in nursing education, informatics, or leadership can live inside the organization you already know.

For a nurse who already works full time, that is a real advantage. You know the people, you understand the workflows, and you may already see the problem your capstone could solve. The RN-to-BS practice experience is designed the same way; its community and capstone hours are meant to be completed in your own workplace or community. So the question is rarely whether a workplace can qualify. The question is whether your specific arrangement clears the two things faculty actually scrutinize: a qualified mentor and a project that is genuinely new academic work.

The real test

What are the faculty-approval and conflict-of-interest rules?

Faculty approve a workplace site when the mentor is independent of your evaluation and the project is separate from your paid job. Those are the two lines that keep a practice experience academic rather than a repackaged shift. The table below lays out where the concern lives and how to keep on the right side of it.

The mentorA direct supervisor who grades your job cannot objectively guide your academic hours.Choose a master's-prepared leader outside your reporting line, in another department if needed.

A qualified mentor holds a master's degree or higher with expertise in your specialization and volunteers as your resource, subject to Excelsior faculty approval. Requirements vary by course and term, so confirm the exact rules with your Excelsior faculty for your capstone course.

When it works

When is your workplace the right site?

Your workplace is a strong fit when the pieces line up without straining any of those lines. If there is a master's-prepared leader in another department or a lateral role who will volunteer as your mentor, if your organization will grant you project time and access to the data or unit you need, and if you can point to a real improvement the setting would welcome, then a workplace site is often the fastest, cleanest route to a staffed capstone.

  • A qualified mentor exists at your employer who is not in your direct reporting line.
  • Your organization will allow the project, the access, and the time it needs.
  • The project is new work with a clear goal, not your standing job description.
  • Your setting matches your track, whether education, informatics, or leadership.
  • Leadership is supportive rather than indifferent to a student project on site.
When it does not

When does a workplace site not work?

A workplace site falls apart in a few predictable situations, and it is better to know them early than to have faculty send you back weeks before your term. The most common is that the only master's-prepared person available is your direct boss, which puts the mentor squarely inside the conflict you are trying to avoid. Another is that your project cannot be separated from your paid duties, so what you propose reads as your job rather than a capstone. A third is practical: your employer will not give you the time, the data, or the sign-off the project needs, or your setting simply does not fit your track, such as an informatics project in a unit with no relevant systems to work with.

When any of those is true, an external site is the cleaner answer, and there is nothing wrong with that. Plenty of strong capstones happen at an agency, clinic, school, or organization other than the student's employer. The point is not to force your workplace to fit; it is to choose the site that lets your project stand on its own and clear faculty review without friction.

Your workplace is not disqualified because it is your workplace. It is disqualified only when the mentor or the project cannot stand apart from your paycheck.
Where we fit

How do we help you frame a workplace site for approval?

We start by looking honestly at what you already have. If your employer can support the work, we help you scope a project that is new, faculty-approvable work rather than your existing role, and we help you identify a qualified mentor who sits outside your reporting line, in another department or a lateral leadership seat if your direct area does not offer one. Then we help you put the arrangement into the framing your faculty and your employer both need to see, so the request reads as a clean academic project rather than a favor or a rebadged shift.

We also handle the paperwork that being an employee does not erase. Even at your own workplace, the site may need an affiliation agreement on file, and it may still require CastleBranch or internal compliance such as a background check, drug screen, and current immunizations. We check what your setting requires and coordinate it on the same timeline as the mentor and the project. And if we look at your situation and conclude the workplace is not the right site, we say so and source an external site instead. Excelsior's nursing programs are accredited by ACEN, not CCNE. Give yourself four to six months before your capstone term so there is room to get this right.

Questions

Workplace capstone sites, answered

Can my own employer be my Excelsior practice-experience site?

Often yes. Excelsior practice experiences are completed in your own community, and your own workplace can be that community, subject to faculty approval and conflict-of-interest rules. Because Excelsior graduate nursing is indirect-care work built around a project rather than direct patient care, your employer is frequently a natural home for it. What faculty look at is whether the project is genuinely new work with a qualified mentor, not your regular job repackaged.

What is the conflict-of-interest concern with using my workplace?

The main concern is that your mentor should not be someone in your direct chain of command who evaluates your job, and your capstone project should not be tasks you already own as an employee. A mentor who is your direct supervisor, or a project that is really your day job, blurs the line between paid work and academic practice experience. We help you structure the arrangement so the mentor and the project sit clearly outside that overlap.

Who can be my mentor if the site is my own workplace?

Your mentor must hold a master's degree or higher with expertise in your specialization and volunteer to serve as your resource, subject to Excelsior faculty approval. At your own workplace that is usually someone in a different department or a lateral leader rather than the manager who signs your reviews. Excelsior uses the term mentor; some students call it a preceptor. We verify eligibility before you commit.

When does a workplace practice experience not work?

It does not work when the only qualified person is your direct boss, when your employer will not allow project time or data access, when the project is indistinguishable from your paid duties, or when your setting cannot support the track you are in. In those cases an external site is cleaner. We tell you honestly which situation you are in rather than forcing a workplace fit.

Does using my workplace still require an affiliation agreement and compliance?

Sometimes. Even at your own employer, the site may need an affiliation agreement on file, and it may still require CastleBranch or internal compliance such as a background check, drug screen, and current immunizations. Being an employee does not automatically satisfy the academic paperwork. We check what your site needs and coordinate it so nothing surfaces late.

How do you help me get a workplace site approved?

We help you scope a project that is new, faculty-approvable work rather than your job, identify a qualified mentor outside your reporting line, and draft the framing your faculty and employer both need to see. We coordinate any affiliation agreement and compliance, and if your workplace is not a good fit we source an external site instead.

Not sure your workplace will clear approval?

Tell us your Excelsior program, your employer, and your capstone term. We will tell you honestly whether your workplace fits, or source an external site, and line up the mentor and project.
