Finding a Mentor and a Practice Site in Alaska
Excelsior University does not assign you a mentor or a host agency. If you are an Alaska RN heading into an MS in Nursing capstone or an RN to BS practice experience, the mentor, the site, and the project are all yours to line up, and this page walks through how that gets done here.
How an Alaska student actually lines this up
Work the pieces in the order real access decisions get made. Start with a project a department already wants finished, because a busy nurse leader in Anchorage or Fairbanks says yes to help, not to homework. Then name the mentor: a master's prepared nurse whose background matches your specialization. Only then ask that mentor's employer for the site agreement, because the agency signs it, not the individual.
Excelsior comes at the end of that chain. Faculty review and approve the mentor you nominate; they do not go find one, and the School of Nursing does not provide clinical instruction or arrange the practice experience for graduate and RN to BS students. Your RN license and the Alaska Board of Nursing
Registered nurses here are licensed by the Alaska Board of Nursing, inside the Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing at the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development. Its verification search is public, so an HR office or tribal health corporation can confirm your standing in a minute. No Alaska agency badges an unlicensed nurse into a quality committee or an electronic record, even for work with no patient contact.
Licenses renew on a two year cycle ending November 30 of even numbered years, and renewal requires continuing competency activities, not only a fee. One that lapses mid term can freeze the agreement, your system access, and the project at once.
Alaska is not a Nurse Licensure Compact state, so a multistate license from elsewhere does not authorize practice here on its own. Compact bills have been introduced in recent sessions, so confirm current status with the Board and nursecompact.com. If your site sits outside the state, start with out of state practice experience.
Have these ready before you approach a site
- Your Alaska RN license number and expiration date.
- One paragraph on the project and the problem it solves for that department.
- The hours you owe and your term dates.
- Proof of, or a plan for, student liability insurance.
Who can mentor you, and where those nurses work
Your mentor must be master's prepared with expertise matching your specialization, and faculty approve the nominee. That is a narrow filter in a small nursing workforce, but the people exist where you would expect. Anchorage carries most of the state's health employment, Fairbanks and Juneau anchor the interior and southeast, and the tribal health system reaches communities the road system never will. Match the mentor to the track, because an informatics student paired with a staffing director will struggle to log defensible hours.
Where Alaska mentors tend to sit
- Education. The University of Alaska Anchorage School of Nursing, the nursing programs run with UAF Community and Technical College in Fairbanks, Alaska Pacific University, and hospital professional development and simulation teams. Track: nursing education.
- Informatics. healtheConnect Alaska, the nonprofit designated as the state health information exchange, plus clinical informatics groups at Providence Alaska Medical Center, Alaska Native Medical Center, and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. Track: nursing informatics.
- Leadership. Nurse managers and quality leaders at Foundation Health Partners in Fairbanks, Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, and the Section of Public Health Nursing at the Alaska Department of Health. Track: nursing leadership.
- Tribal and rural health. Tribally managed hospitals and health corporations in Bethel, Nome, Kotzebue, Sitka, and Dillingham, whose onboarding rules differ from hospital rules.
The site, the affiliation agreement, and CastleBranch
A willing mentor is not yet a site. Excelsior needs a signed affiliation agreement with the organization where the hours happen, and it goes to whoever holds contract authority: a legal office at a large system, a chief nursing officer at a mid sized hospital, an administrator at a clinic or public health center. Compliance runs through CastleBranch: immunizations, background check, and whatever else your program specifies, with the host agency free to add its own requirements. If a site declines, it is rarely about you, so keep two or three conversations alive.
135 hours for the capstone, about 90 for RN to BS
Each MSN capstone carries 135 practice experience hours built around an independent project with your mentor. RN to BS runs about 90 hours across two 45 hour courses. That is the whole obligation, and it is worth arithmetic before you scope anything: 135 hours is a real commitment on top of a nursing job, and small enough that a vague project will consume it without producing anything the site can use. A practice experience at this level is not a clinical rotation and it is not direct patient care. It is indirect care work: curriculum, data, policy, quality, workflow. Alaska adds its own scheduling facts, since shift rotations, holiday coverage, weather, and travel off the road system compress the weeks you actually have. Agree with your mentor up front on how hours get logged.
Remote and hybrid hours in a state this size
Indirect care work travels better than bedside work, and in Alaska that matters more than almost anywhere. Curriculum revision, dashboard building, policy drafting, and quality analysis can often run partly from home when the site agrees and faculty approve in advance. Students in Bethel, Kodiak, or Ketchikan sometimes work with an Anchorage mentor for that reason. Treat none of it as a promise, since whether remote hours count is your program's call and the site's call, settled in writing before you log anything. If a mentor withdraws mid term, mentor backed out and need a mentor fast cover the recovery.

Your 135 hours go into a project such as a curriculum revision, a documentation improvement, or a quality initiative. Framing it as bedside supervision to a prospective site usually earns a no.
Can my own manager be my mentor?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. The person must be master's prepared with expertise in your specialization, and faculty must approve. The practical risk is role confusion, since your capstone needs protected time and honest evaluation from someone who also writes your performance review.
Do you help prelicensure Excelsior students in Alaska?
No. Excelsior arranges clinical placement itself for its prelicensure programs, including the hybrid BSN based in St. Petersburg, Florida, and its associate degree track.
